Routine helps us organize and provide structure. While important in some respect, a life of too much routine can also be detrimental. If people follow the same pattern everyday, their lives become monotonous and tiresome. This is seen in people's work life and personal life. A person gets up, goes to work, has the same lunch, and has the same meal, they sleep, and then they repeat it all the next day. Following such a cycle will gradually make a person feel imprisoned and unable to get out.

A person may find that too much routine slowly kills motivation and passion. When individuals do not have enough new experiences to spark interest in their lives and activities, they tend to get bored, and the interest begins to fizzle out.

They may feel constantly tired, even if they do not engage in rigorous work, due to the psychological strain of the same obligations over and over again. Too much pressure of this constant obligation could negatively affect the individual. People may become prone to anxiety and loneliness or feel depression since their lives don't seem very worthwhile anymore.

Finally, too much routine may kill creativity and the growth of individuals. They become comfortable with the everyday habit and lose all desire to try something new. They may shun opportunities and tasks that are difficult, as they fear moving away from their comfortable and 'safe' routine. In return, individuals do not further their learning or their skillset.

An individual may also find their relationships suffer as they can get consumed by work and day-to-day activities. They may be seeing their family and friends a lot less often, which leads to emotional distance and fraying relations.

Though routine is important to be both functional and successful, it is also important to be able to strike a balance. One must make time for relaxation, leisure, trips and friends, physical exercise, hobbies, etc. Making time for such activities is crucial for making one's life fun and more importantly, healthy. A good routine should support one's life and not take it over.
