Homeschool Coop - Gardening with John

in Home Edders2 years ago

Yesterday we had our first homeschool coop in our small mountain town of Panama. We got together with a few of the other families in the area who homeschool and had a lesson about gardening. We had asked our friend who has a green thumb to teach the kids a lesson and he did an amazing job!

The kids were really engaged the entire time! He took them on a small tour of what he has planted and let them ask him all kinds of questions. He talked to them about different kinds of fertilizers and how they are used. I mean, who doesn't want to learn about gardening in such a beautiful environment?

They have built a few greenhouses with bamboo and plastic. The greenhouses like this work really well! The kids loved getting to see all of the different plants including pineapples - one which was almost ripe, but an opossum got to it first!

After the tour, the kids took three "tests." The first one was to talk about corn and how each little piece of corn silk is wrapped around a piece of corn while it is growing. I didn't know that! He also showed the kids some corn growing. They then guessed how many kernels were on the red corn and the winner got a candy bar as a prize!

Next he had made a paper with 26 different seeds glued to it! Each kid had to guess what grew from each seed. It was really hard, and the best kid scored 15. I was pretty surprised when I got 20 of them right - I only guessed on a few! This activity took a little bit of time, but the kids liked doing it as well!

.

Then the kids had their last test - guessing how many kernels of corn were in a small jar. There were 301! It was a fun activity and everyone was happy to have participated!

After all the tests, our friend showed the kids his old 4-H notebook. He showed them that he always has a plan for his garden. This one he is showing them was 50 years old - one of his first garden plans! It was so cool to see how he has kept up with gardening for so much of his life! He is a wealth of knowledge!

Check out these 4-H ribbons he won as well! We asked him what they were for and he said they were for bug collections he made or garden produce he grew that won awards. He had so many of them in his notebook!

I am so glad we decided to ask our friend to share his knowledge with the kids! It makes me wonder who else we should ask in our community to share their knowledge with the kids!!

Hi @apanamamama, the kids had a wonderful and productive day with the gardening class, cultivating the land is a beautiful task for our little ones; teaching outdoors is of great benefit to children and even better when there is someone with the right tools and techniques for it, like this gentleman who has been cultivating for several years.

Blessings!

This is so great, love how interactive this is. He is a wonderful teacher. How to Grow food is one of the most important things we can pass on to our children.
Very inspiring post @apanamamama xxxx

It’s a good skill set to learn, it’s always good to see when people pass knowledge onto the next generation. 👍

Yes, I am so thankful to have friends like him who actually know about gardening since I really don't! I'm trying to learn, but there is a lot to know...and I am just starting out! I don't even know which plants I shouldn't have together! Ha!

Well I’ve been a landscape gardener for 25 years now, and I wouldn’t be able to tell you that either. Ha.

Nice homesteading class with lot of lessons and experience, kids are always ready to learn if there are carried along with the lessons. I love the part where you guys played the game that what make it fun and interesting. Thanks @apanamamama for sharing 🥰
