Starting Up A New School Year

in Home Edderslast year

We pretty much year round school in our house! That way we can take off whenever it's necessary. Last year we started in March when the Panamanian schools start, and we are just starting another school year next week.

I've been in planning mode recently. I hope that it's going to work out well and we won't have too many problems the first day - especially since a lot of it is online and we only really have one computer! Yikes!

In the past, we've used a literature, Charlotte Mason based curriculum called Ambleside Online. Last year, we mostly did Easy Peasy Online with a few added extras like Master Math, History of the World, and a few other subjects.

This year, I've changed things up a bit and we'll be using some of Easy Peasy, but also adding in other classes I've found at Freedom Homeschooling and Plain and Not So Plain. The workbook pages for Spelling, English, and Math for most of my kids will come from Plain and Not So Plain. We also used them last year and they worked well.

The older kids will all be doing Spanish lessons on Easy Peasy. They will also use Master Math. Some of the younger kids will also have some work on Easy Peasy like Reading or Language Arts.

Each kid will also have these assignments to complete each day:
Spanish Reading - 2 paragraphs outloud
Copywork - copy a Bible verse in Spanish in cursive
Spanish Sentences - 3 sentences using unique vocabulary and conjugating the verb correctly
Reading - assigned reading book - 1/2 to 1 chapter (can count toward reading time for the weekend), write a 1-3 sentence summary in your notebook of what you read.
Spelling Workbook - 1 lesson per day
Bible

They also will have a different assignment based on which day it is. For example, my oldest son's weekly tasks look like this:
Monday - Computer basics Read one lesson, watch video.

Tuesday - Automotive Class Read one lesson, watch video.

Wednesday - Architecture Class Choose Ancient & Classical Works and read one section (push read more if it is offered)

Thursday - Construction Choose a course and begin working. Spend about 30 minutes a day - you will need to login to keep track.

Friday - Java Class Self paced course - login to keep track.

I tried to pick a few different classes from Freedom Homeschooling that they would each be interested in.

The older kids will also be doing the Home Ec Class that is offered at Plain and Not So Plain.

I really hope this new schedule works out well and it doesn't end up being too much. I will continue with teaching some parts all together as a group too - Bible, History, Science, Spanish, and a few other classes. I think it's going to be a great year!
