Hi home school friends!
Today I was glad that my wife is able to think on her feet, as usual! See what I mean below!
Frigid
So the temperature has been really going down as of late and we are routinely in the low 30’s high 20’s Fahrenheit and we even had a little bit of the teens one night! Chilly chilly for sure! What that ends up meaning though is the little one is going absolutely stir crazy in the house since it’s still a bit too cold to keep him outside for long periods of time. The most we try and do is an hour, he tends to not let us know when he’s cold especially if he’s having fun or if it’s new. He does a few hundred laps of the living room a day just playing and having fun indoors which is good in many ways, destructive in as many ways lol
The evenings are a bit challenging because he’s still got some energy to burn. He’s got a bicycle and enjoys riding it in the warm weather but we were trying to figure out what to do so he could ride it inside. My wife saw something online a while ago where you prop up the training wheels and you can ride it indoors!
Ignore the mess but it was great! We were able to let him burn the energy he had pent up while at the same time retaining a little bit of sanity knowing he won’t kill himself running round lol. He tends to get a little wild when he’s pent up but I don’t blame him. It’s tough being inside all the time! He has fun watching a show of his or two while he rides so it’s a nice benefit to all involved lol.
Besides the benefit to his immune system the other great thing that we noticed was that once he rode the bike for about 10 minutes or so he was in a better mental state to learn things. We would go through some letters and other stuff that we’ve been trying to teach him and he recognized more of them after riding than he normally would. Big score there!
It’s hard to believe that just a few short weeks ago he was taking the lead on washing his own wagon! We had just picked the thing up in the beginning of September from someone for free, the best kind of course, and I figured it would be fun for him to help me clean it. He went through his first car wash a few weeks prior to that so he was primed to wash his own little car.
He was using the bucket and the water squirter to clean it and did a dam good job at it too!
I bring it up because when we were going out on the deck to get his bicycle for the training wheel riding inside, he saw it out there and wanted to take it out. I let him convince me to take it out because I myself needed to go for a walk, some parts of the remote work and the living in the cold isn’t as nice as it was in the summer where we could go out for walks before and after work comfortably lol. The days of going out and washing the wagon like this are certainly done for the year!
We noticed that after these outings where he got to burn a lot of energy he was more prone to be interested in doing some constructive learning which was great. We are trying to teach him what we can in the time we can so that when we have to officially start reporting this stuff to whatever homeschool organization in our local area needs it, we will have a better time. We just tend to forget things that we as adults, used to do as kids! Burning off energy is certainly one of them, makes for a better time learning lol

This is a great idea! My little girl has a bike too but she couldn't really practice on it because we can't go out too far that much. Parks are a little bit restricted still over here plus there's so much hassle when we try to go out. I can't say I agree with the police here asking to have our 4 year old daughter wear a mask and a faceshield while she's running around. No can do, sir! With all due respect.
Boys tend to have a lot more energy than girls and they also tend to have a different way of learning. Glad to see you and your wife found a perfect way to help in his learning.

Yeah the thought of forcing kids that are under 9 or 10 to wear all that crap just to be a kid is ridiculous. I'm glad that your daughter has a bike, hopefully you have an old pair of shoes to let her use it indoors! You could even make a fake pair of training wheels if you needed to in order to do this.
