TIPS FOR CREATING LEARNING-FRIENDLY SPACES AT HOME FOR OUR CHILDREN/CONSEJOS PARA CREAR ESPACIOS EN CASA FAVORABLES PARA EL APRENDIZAJE DE NUESTROS HIJOS (Eng/Esp)

in Home Edders3 years ago (edited)
Hello friends of Home Edders, I'm @emimoron and I continue to be committed to supporting parents so that they can more easily develop this role as educators in academic content that they have taken on as a result of the pandemic, because although it is true that before all this we helped the children to do their homework, now we have to be teachers and parents at the same time.

This post is dedicated to all of you who, like me, faced the hard task of creating pleasant spaces for "classes" in our homes. Certainly our homes are arranged to be cosy places, where we feel the love, peace, tranquillity and security that we don't have in the street, but we don't design spaces for learning, apart from the fact that we can have an office or library, it is not the same as a classroom.

One of the most frequent mistakes when starting the process of education at home is to believe that any place is equal to develop academic activities and, my dear readers, this is far from being suitable for learning. Think about this for a moment: If it has been difficult for you as adults to do your work from home (if we had a job outside the home) because of the large number of distractions that can be found there, imagine our children. That is why it is necessary to select a space that we can make favourable and pleasant for study, that is why I propose the following:

1.- Bedrooms or bedrooms are not for studying The bedroom is the place that our brain associates with rest and this has been engraved in the depths of our unconscious, it is also the favourite place of some parents to punish their children with the typical phrase "you will stay in your room punished until I say so" in that case we have two defined and engraved ideas of what the bedroom is: firstly the place where I go to sleep and secondly where I sometimes find myself punished. Now to introduce in the child's mind that the bedroom will also be my classroom is a failed act unless we adapt the space, and I say this in the last resort, if there is no other place at home, we will place a desk or table and chair and we will try to visually separate the bed from the study space. Because even if I don't want it my mind will tell my body let's go to sleep.

2. - A quiet place without much noise, disturbance or distraction When selecting the place where my child is going to study, whether I am giving the lesson or he is on his own, we must consider that it is not a busy place in the house, for example I have found friends and relatives who have made the dining room table the classroom, For example, I have come across friends and relatives who have made the dining room table the classroom, where in addition to the daily chores, the child is subjected to the opening and closing of the front door, people walking around the common area, mum and dad doing the housework, siblings playing next to them or even worse, someone watching TV while the child is trying to learn a lesson. It is not a question of locking them in the last corner of the house but to get a space where our child associates the idea of study and finds his or her concentration.

A place with good lighting and ventilation Good lighting makes the child work less when reading or visualising study material, good ventilation creates a pleasant space. Remember the temperature of the environment is a factor that can get out of control, in my school days I remember that in the last grade of primary school I managed to start learning when the air conditioning in the classroom was damaged, and if you can laugh but in addition to the teacher suffering from heat and put the air conditioning at maximum I had a place where it hit me directly and even though I wore a jacket I ended up with frozen hands, a runny nose and severe headaches and I assure you that nobody learns like that.

4.-Allow the child to participate in the selection of the place that will be used for study Nothing excites a child more than having the freedom to participate in decisions that he/she considers to be transcendental such as being able to choose where the decoration will be, even if he/she wants to put a different colour on the walls than the rest of the house, this will help us to create a really pleasant space so that he/she feels that the process of education at home is a wonderful journey.

As someone who has experienced both the school system and homeschooling (by choice, rather than due to the pandemic) for my children, something I learnt along the way is that education doesn't always have to be in a formal setting. Also different settings work better for different children, depending on their learning styles and personality.

1.- Bedrooms or bedrooms are not for studying

For younger children, I agree. Even with a desk set up in there, my girls preferred the living room floor. They hated sitting still on any tale or chair. Perhaps their experience in the school and having to sit (often bored) for long periods put them off. Being on the living room floor gave them a certain freedom to move around as they wanted and, surprisingly they absorbed information better this way.

As they got older this changed. My eldest liked her personal space and her bedroom was it, so she would do nearly all of her work there, even her homework, when she went back to school for about a year, except when she felt she wanted company. Then she'd come out to the dining table.

My youngest (now nearly 18) does her work at a desk, but this is through official channels for highschool and she does indeed seem to have chosen a space as you describe.

Another key point is found in the age and learning style, my son was hyperactive from a very young age and was easily bored of the spaces until we were building together a place where he could find his concentration, hence the importance of allowing them to participate in choosing the right place for study, today he is already a young man of 19 years and although he does not live with me where he is, he tries to have his place of peace to do his academic work.

In my country, most of the schools have a design inspired by the old army barracks, they are grey and cold spaces, not at all favourable for studying. One of the things I like to tell parents is that it is not about a formal space, but a pleasant space that is ready for study, because in our growth, the modelling of behaviour has a lot to do with the environment.
