in Home Edders3 years ago

Hello Homeedders and Educators,

Science is made simple with this Does it Float or Sink Game for Toddlers. Get your kids splashing & having fun this water experiment.💦 An easy and early activity for preschool and toddlers to have.

This is what I did last week with my 2yr and 4mo toddler. Caleb and I had a lot of fun with this activity. He loves any activitiy that involves water so this was right in his element.

Discovering and Curiosity are the two traits that almost every kid possesses.

We began to gather and pick all kind of things you can naturally find outdoors, in the garden, park or in the yard. This was such a lovely way to spend a beautiful morning.

I chose to use objects found outside because I wanted to incorporate some outside time in the activity.

We had leaves, flowers, cones, hazelnuts, tree bark, beans, stones, shells, walnut shells, decorative glass pebbles, snail shell, wooden clips, chopsticks, small wooden balls, etc.

What You Need:

  • a collection of items (you can get either their toys, household items, plastic items, nature items or anything else you consider right for this activity)
  • one large container filled with water
  • two more trays/bins (empty) for making the classification of the items

I prepared this activity where we filled one bin with water and another with different solid objects. Then I asked him to put the objects one by one (but in the end he put everything in the same time) into the water and notice what objects sank and what floated.

This activity provides
💦Sensory play
💦Motor skill development
💦Cognitive learning
💦Confidence development

All in all, it was quite a fruitful activity. My son's creativity was tested and his ability to find answers were put to work. He also tried to push the lighter objects into the water to check if they remained there.

Other Tips:

  1. For older children, you can give them a recording sheet in which they had to tick either a Sink box or Float box depending upon the behaviour of the object.
  2. Also, older children can make the connection with Heavier/Ligther analogy, understanding that heavier objects sank while the lighter objects floated.
  3. You can place some mat under the water box and try to do this activity on floor to avoid mess and grab some more time for yourself while they play.

Putting everything at once sounds like a very toddler thing to do XD It looked much cooler that way though ;D

I never thought to do this one in such an organised fashion, all our sink or float stuff was accidentally done at the beach or river or in puddles. I remember my daughter at 2 learning about tides as she kept throwing a plastic shovel into the water and watching the flow of the river bring it back to shore.

That was a pretty looking pool of water in the end as well! I can imagine kids starting to look around for more and more things to see if they float.

I remember a TV programme, an adult one, where they did a little section begin each ad break where they showed the audience an item and asked whether it would flush or not. Then after the ads they'd drop in in the toilet and flush. A more mildly amusing form of this, although probably not great for the sewer system when they did flush.

Ohh that sounds a bit funny.

In the end, he did liked the activity and we'll repeat it again as soon as possible. Actually, I'm waiting for the REAL summer to come and have plenty of water activities outdoor.:p

Those objects on the tray make such a pretty picture!

Well, that's NATURE, isn't it?:p
Thank you btw :p

Yey! What a beautiful activity with nature. Plus the water! I bet every kid loves to play with water. Oh, well at leaat mine do, and so does your Lil one. 😍

Hello I love your experiment exercise certainly is a way in which children not only enjoy and entertain themselves but as you have pointed out well discover something new regarding their senses and the shape of objects as well as the elements that constitute them. Very nice

As always providing the community with novel and very interesting strategies, I really think it is an excellent way to show children the world of shapes, sensations and elements. Thank you always for sharing

Cool activity, while reading it, I realized that even my 5 year old would enjoy this. I think she doesn't understand that some things float, and others don't yet, so this will be on my list for this week if the weather is nice.

Thanks for sharing! You always have great ideas :)
