Study Opportunities in Venezuela
As a university professor, in this post, I want to focus on the topic of education in my country and the opportunities that universities offer students, despite the economic crisis that Venezuela is suffering.
Our country offers excellent opportunities to study different professional careers, Venezuela has excellent internationally recognized institutes and universities, however, the economic crisis that the country has been suffering in the past few years, coupled with the pandemic, has made these institutions suffer large budget cuts that have caused a deterioration of the facilities, mainly in public institutions. Also, the decrease in the salaries of professors has had an impact on the quality of education, professors have emigrated to other universities in Latin America in search of a better salary.
Oportunidades de Estudio en Venezuela
Cómo profesor universitario quiero enfocarme para este post en la educación de mi país y en las oportunidades que ofrecen las universidades a los estudiantes, a pesar de la crisis económica que sufre Venezuela.
Nuestro país ofrece excelentes oportunidades para estudiar diferentes carreras profesionales, Venezuela cuenta con excelentes institutos y universidades muy reconocidas a nivel internacional, sin embargo, desde hace algunos años la crisis económica que sufre el país, aunado a la pandemia, ha hecho que estas instituciones sufran grandes recortes presupuestarios que han producido un deterioro de las instalaciones, principalmente en las instituciones públicas. También la merma en los sueldos de los profesores ha repercutido en la calidad de la educación, los profesores han emigrado a otras universidades de Latinoamérica en busca de mejores ingresos.
However, academic activities have not stopped, and the most renowned universities such as the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), the Simón Bolívar University (USB), the University of Zulia (LUZ), the University of the Andes ( ULA), as well as the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC), continue to offer, despite the crisis, careers in the fields of engineering, medicine, law, administration, human sciences, economics, and basic sciences, among others.

How much does it cost to study in Venezuela?
I think that for foreign students Venezuela is still a very good place to study, internally it suffers from hyperinflation and everything has become dollarized, in such a way that a person who comes from abroad with dollars with any other currency might think that it is very expensive to live or study in this country, but it is the opposite, what has really been devalued is the national currency, the Bolívar, but with 300 dollars a month, a student can easily get housing, food, transportation and all the necessary expenses to live.

Pienso que para los estudiantes extranjeros Venezuela sigue siendo un lugar muy bueno para estudiar, internamente se sufre de una hiperinflación y todo se ha dolarizado, de tal manera que una persona que venga del exterior con dólares y cualquier otra moneda podría pensar que es muy costoso vivir o estudiar en este país, pero es todo lo contrario, lo que realmente se ha devaluado es la moneda nacional, el Bolívar, pero con 300 $ mensuales un estudiante puede fácilmente conseguir vivienda, comida, transporte y todos los gastos necesarios para vivir.
An example of the cost of living is that a family of three can live on $500 per month. The cost of living in Venezuela is very relative, for example, electricity, water, gas for cooking and transportation are very cheap; there are well-equipped student residences where there are studio rooms that can be rented for $50 per month or even less.
Private institutions are also comparatively cheap, in Venezuela, there are many Colombians who come to do undergraduate and especially postgraduate university degrees because they are much cheaper than in their country. Despite the crisis, there are still excellent professors in many universities.
Un ejemplo del costo de la vida es que una familia de tres personas puede vivir con 500$ mensuales. El costo de la vida en Venezuela es muy relativo, por ejemplo, los servicios de electricidad, agua, gas para cocina y transporte son muy económicos; hay residencias estudiantiles muy bien equipadas donde hay habitaciones tipo estudio que se pueden alquilar por 50$ mensuales o hasta menos.
Las instituciones privadas son también comparativamente económicas, en Venezuela hay muchos colombianos que viene a hacer carreras universitarias de pregrado y especialmente postgrado debido a que son mucho más económicas que en su país. A pesar de la crisis todavía se cuenta con excelentes profesores en las instituciones de educación técnica y universitaria.
Venezuela continues to be a wonderful country, where the warmth of its inhabitants is one of the factors that most attracts foreigners, both tourists, and students. However, we live in a country where our jobs pay very little unless we are getting paid in dollars, this is why for foreign people that come with a nice amount of dollars (or any other currency that is not Venezuela's currency, Bolivar) it is easy to have a good student life.
Dare to know our country, and see the great opportunities that we still offer in different fields of education, I hope that soon things will improve in our country and we can rise from the ashes as a prosperous country offering the best education.
Venezuela sigue siendo un maravilloso país donde la calidez de sus habitantes es uno de los factores que más atrae a los extranjeros, tanto a turistas como estudiantes. Sin embargo, vivimos en un país donde nuestros trabajos pagan muy poco a menos que nos paguen en dólares, es por eso que para los extranjeros que vienen con una buena cantidad de dólares (o cualquier otra moneda que no sea la moneda de Venezuela, Bolívar) es fácil tener una buena vida estudiantil.
Atrévete a conocer nuestro país, y ver las grandes oportunidades que aún ofrecemos en diferentes campos de la educación. Espero que pronto las cosas mejoren en nuestro país y podamos resurgir de las cenizas como un país próspero ofreciendo la mejor educación.
Estuve estudiando en la UCV, pero lamentablemente por la situación país no pude seguir manteniendome en ccs y tuve que regresarme a Maturin. Pero tuve una bonita experiencia durante el corto tiempo, saludos!
Extraño mucho los días en los que era sencillo estudiar acá con un salario digno. Yo estudié en LUZ y en la universidad Simón Bolívar, me encantaba Caracas, pero definitivamente la situación no ha sido nada fácil.

A family of three for $500 a month is a lot higher than ours. We are a family of four, our monthly expenses is about $150. Hyperinflation could be one of the reason why a family of three would need $500 a month.

Well, one also has to take into account that I compare the prices to other Latin American countries, it is quite common for people from Colombia to come here to study due to the low prices in comparison, and these prices are not so different in other Latin American countries. I am of course taking into account expenses such as renting a place, transportation, and having extra money for recreational activities. Of course, I live in a big city, there are other cities that are cheaper.
$150 is impressive! I have a family of three, we spend around $300 per month.
Oh, I was wrong, I should say we are spending $300 per month, not $150. But still, it is quite less than $500.
