UNSCHOOLING MATHS LESSON: NUMBERS

in Home Edders2 years ago

13, 30 - they sound so similar to our kids in the very beginning of their way to the world of Maths.
But it's very important to understand numbers and their compound very well to move further to number actions (+ and - and others).

My boy can count rather well now, though he doesn't like doing it, and I noticed he has abstract imagination about numbers. He hasn't got that 11 is 10+1, and 30 can be 3 times 10, so he doesn't understand their compound.
And I decided to fill this space in his head.

Counting material, for example, sticks (or anything other you have) are the best for it.
We can teach Maths, counting and numbers compound very easy with the help of ordinary sticks. It's an old method, and it's still the best;)

That's moments of our lesson, or better to say, a stick game, as I've called it for him;)
Kids like playing more than studying;)

it's visual explaining how 76 can consist of 70 tens + 6 units

we were plying with sticks rather long, and he liked to show me different numbers with the help of them.
And he really got the topic very fast!

And in the end, we tried to count double figures, and after our game he could do it much better!
Now he knows what are tens, units and what is the difference between them.

This makes me remember my childhood when my father use popsicles in learning about numbers.

Good strategy. Thanks for sharing.
