HiveWord daily words are now WAY less obscure, same for competitive duels

in #hive2 months ago

One piece of feedback has come through loud and clear lately: some of the daily words have been way too obscure on HiveWord.

You were right.

I’m a native English speaker, and even I was looking at a few recent answers thinking, "What on earth is this?" There’s a difference between a word being challenging and a word being so weird that it just feels unfair.

I mean, come on, tajes? lmao. I've never heard of that word before, amongst some of the other strange words you've probably seen if you have been playing.

That is not the kind of difficulty HiveWord is supposed to have.

The goal has always been for the daily word to be recognisable English. Sometimes it should be tricky. Sometimes it should make you stop and think. But it should not feel like you need a medieval dictionary, a Scrabble tournament judge, and a minor in obscure vocabulary just to have a chance.

So I’ve fixed it.

Behind the scenes, I updated the word selection so the answer pool now leans much more heavily toward common, familiar English words. There will still be some tougher ones in the mix, because a little bite is part of the fun, but the truly bizarre outliers have been pushed out of the daily answer pool.

To be clear: valid guesses can still be broader, because that helps keep gameplay flexible. But the actual answer words should feel like real words that normal people actually know.

Thanks to everyone who called this out. That feedback was fair, useful, and honestly overdue. If something feels off in HiveWord, keep saying so. The whole point is to make the game fun, competitive, and satisfying, not annoying in a "well technically it is a word" kind of way.

Future daily words should feel a lot better.

Tajes was an ODD one, I don't know how many people know of that word. I'm waiting to see what yesterday's word is. I think the way the word ends isn't very good either because it's effectively doubling the number of words. Anything you can do about that

I don't think Wordle does plurals, so that reduces the options, but I've seen them in HiveWord. I don't see that as a big problem as it's part of the challenge.

I disagree with that, as effectively your guessing a four letter plural word and not a five letter word. I prefer it should stick with just 5 letter word. Otherwise you might as well just create a 4 letter word game

Fair enough. It needs to be made clear what sort of words will be used. I assume Wordle have someone pick their words rather than an algorithm.

Phew!!! You know I actually had my husband on Hive for three seconds but he gave up at tajes...maybe he will get back into the game now. Keep up the good work... Loving the Hive Word and your responsiveness to feedback. Hope you've had a great long wkd.

That's cool. It's amazing how many possible words there are. Even on Wordle there have been some I wouldn't think of, but that may be US/UK differences.

Great to see the game taking off.

Hahahaha. Right! I lost at Tajes!

Btw, is there any landing page for all of these indie mini games? The non-DHF apps hahah. I know several; your games, @coldbeetrootsoup's, maybe there are others too. so we can promote them all easily 😃

hive.coldbeetrootsoup.com

I created a Gaming Hub and will be adding games once a week or once every 2 weeks :)

Ah, cool!
Non native aenglish speaker here likes this adjustment 😄
It's also nice that we can see who is playing the game.
I noticed #hiveword has entered the trending tags on Snaps already.
It's getting more popular 💪

As I think I've mentioned somewhere before I hope the bizarro words don't completely vanish, I found them a lot of fun from a learned a new word that I'm probably going to forget the index of in not long kinda way even though I don't think I got any of them :)

Dropping the frequency by a lot is definitely a good call though.
