Pure Substances

Matter can either be a mixture or a pure substance. Pure substances cannot be physically separated?

The three parts that make up an atom:

  1. Neutrons have no charge
  2. Protons have a positive charge
  3. Electrons have a negative charge

There is only one kind of atom in an element. There are more different kinds of atom in a compound. Elements and compounds are the two types of pure substances found in nature. Atoms have only one kind of atom and compounds will have two more kinds of atom. Water is a compound. Each molecule contains two hydrogens and one atom. Compounds will always form from the same ratio of atoms. Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is a compound.

Water is different from hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen and oxygen are gases. The come together to form liquid water. I can breathe oxygen gas. I cannot breathe liquid water.

One molecule of water contains 2 hydrogens and one oxygen.
