Louis Pasteur "saved the world" through beer by using it to develop the Germ Theory of Disease. In the 1850s, while studying why beer spoiled, he discovered that microscopic bacteria were turning it sour. This led to his revolutionary heating method, pasteurization, and eventually the creation of life-saving vaccines.
The Discovery: "Beer is Alive"
In the mid-1800s, brewers struggled with beer spoiling and turning sour, which caused massive economic losses. French scientist Louis Pasteur was tasked with investigating the issue. Through his microscope, he made a startling discovery: beer was "alive".
- Yeast: He observed that large, healthy yeast cells were responsible for the good fermentation process.
- Bacteria: Alongside the yeast, he spotted smaller, sinister bacteria cells which were the root cause of the spoilage.
The Breakthrough: "Pasteurization"
Pasteur realized that the bacteria were airborne and infecting the brew. To save the beer, he developed a protocol of heating the liquid to a precise temperature to kill the harmful microbes without destroying the flavor or the yeast needed for brewing. This process was officially named Pasteurization and is still universally used today to keep food and beverages safe.

But science > dogma because facts are followed wherever they lead, rather than being cherry picked to support pre-existing conclusions.
