Shooting at Jerusalem

Amazing Pictures

Yesterday, just around noon Palestinian Islamic Jihad fired off a large salvo of rockets vaguely aimed at Jerusalem. This prompted me to tweet:

Indigenous people don't fire vaguely guided rockets toward their "third holiest site".

A short while later we got the most amazing pictures I've ever seen of a non-test use of Iron Dome and specifically the Tamir interception rocket.

iron-dome-interception-collage.jpg

The first place I saw this tweeted out by a former IDF Spokesperson who I know personally, prompted me to not believe it to be a real photograph. But soon I saw more tweets with higher quality images and attribution to photographer Gilad Kafir.

What do we see here?

The closing speed of the Tamir interceptor is probably over Mach 2 (5000 KPH or 3000 MPH) and accelerating (as you can see it is powered right up to intercept) and the inbound rocket is probably a little below Mach 1. The interceptor is flying from the top of the frame with an exhaust flame and trail. It is heading toward the Palestinian rocket which by this point is just flying in a parabola having stopped firing its engine during ascent.

We can't tell which way is up in this image and the most likely positioning is that this was nearly overhead for the photographer. The Palestinian rocket is probably falling and the Tamir is probably climbing, but both are flying horizontally to some degree too.

How big is that explosion

Just to give you a scale for that boom, I've heard it many times. When the interception is close (a few km) it shakes the apartment and windows. When it is far away which you can tell because the sound can arrive 1 minute after the flash meaning around 20km distant, it can be like moderate thunder.

Just on Thursday night there was a concert for 40,000 people in the park about 1.5km from me. I can hear these concerts clearly enough from my balcony to recognise the songs. During this concert there were a couple of interceptions probably 23km to the south. An acquaintance of mine was at the concert and wrote this account. I recorded the interceptions and the rumble over a minute later.

The new normal

Unfortunately this has been an infrequent normal for so long we kinda get past it. It has been infinitely worse further south than for us in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. And it is awful when it fails and an 80 year old woman dies in her apartment as happened two days ago. Only then do we understand how effective it's been for a decade.

Meme

I couldn't help it, this image needed to be memed. The words come from this timeless Babylon Bee story from a couple of years ago. Yes, I turned the image around because it just makes more sense to people to have the incoming terrorist rocket falling and the interceptor rising.

Love it!

Technically (however) David's Sling is a different weapon system to this one but the principal is correct.

There is a Video on Youtube that says this was David's Sling. First use.

David's sling was used for one interception but I believe the missile looks different to the one in these photos.

Pretty incredible technology.

How well prepared this photographer was ready with his camera? He must have some sixth sense or very strong intution power that he was able to capture such rare pictures.

We've had hundreds of Iron Dome launches over the last week, it's not hard to predict where, the only question is when and the exact direction of the rockets. This did take skill and patience but it's not impossible.

Can AI play an important role in taking such pictures? It can be trained like us and it can work 24*7 without any need of rest or sleep.

I was kind of confused to really know who took that photograph because the person was well prepared and probably informed on the scene that was about to happen.

We know where the Iron Dome batteries are and we know where the incoming fire is coming from, It's not that hard to predict.

@brainoflondon I often listen the war between Israel and Gaza. Why Muslims and Jews fight with each other? Why the bloods of humans are cheap in Israel and Gaza? Can their fight be over? Who is the main reason of this fight?

My simplest explanation is that Islam has always encouraged its followers to seek territorial conquest and colonization and for almost the first time, one of the colonized lands and people (Israel and Jews) have retaken their land and re-established our culture and people in the place where all our stories and history come from.

Colonizers don't like losing.

I believe that if one regains his lost land and re-establishes his culture and people in that place, no one else should have any objection, and especially if a place is associated with your history, it becomes more sacred to you.
Can this issue not be resolved through dialogue so that human lives are not lost?

Amazing capture and explosion even if it is so bad that the world goes in such wrong directions. The Iron Dome is a great shield and seeing it in action I am glad that also Romania bought one. Do you know what surface does it cover and protects?

I don't know coverage areas but it will be heavily dependent on the type of incoming fire and how distant it is.

Amazing photo!

We've got used to how effective Iron Dome is at protecting us, but what I can never get used to is the pure evil hatred of those that fire unguided rockets at Jewish civilians (even in the Holy City) even though they know that over 20% of the rockets will misfire and fall on their own people and it is extremely rare for them to succeed in killing a Jew.

In this latest encounter they've killed at least 22 of their own people from misfiring rockets and managed to kill one 80 year old Jew (when Iron Dome failed).

With David's Sling in operation now and the laser-based Iron Beam coming online soon, these percentages will move more in Israel's favour. The military logic of firing rockets at Israel is completely lacking.

But anti-semitism is a hatred that is completely beyond military logic or common sense.

Iron Beam is a nice idea and I really hope it can deal with mortar fire at close range better than Iron Dome. Fundamentally it's problems in weather make it a backup. If it has the capability to begin burning rockets or mortars during their ascent phase, that would be something we can't do now. That would leave the debris falling on Gaza more often than even their own crappy engineering gives.

I wasn't quite sure why we used David's Sling this time unless we just wanted a real world test of the thing, it seems to me better suited for much faster, higher targets but perhaps it's good to get a real life kill done.

I think they deployed it in Tel Aviv to give two layers of protection.

Bloody hell that is mad and happens from time to time? The world is nuts.

260 similar interceptions in the last few days.

We’re so detached from all of this here in England

Worse: you're fed a diet of lies about Jews and Israel.

Exactly. The press is mostly lies and it’s about time more of us realised that. I know many good people who believe the whole lot, if the papers say so, it must be true. For crying out loud!

This should not be any sign of war because the world can't stand to withstand another set of war in this present time

Hearing about this war for years and years and nothing got concluded between both these nations. People are dying from both sides. Jerusalem is a holy place for both nations, they both solve these issues by sitting on the table if there is any chance. So, the nations from both sides start to live peacefully. I will not go on a debate here that who is right or who is wrong.

When Jews claimed the land as a Zionist agenda with the support of Western countries, they did not ask the Palestinians politely if they could live there or claim it. No they treated them like animals and slaughtered them with a lot more fire power than the Palestinians have. The Palestinians have every right to fight back and the 'nation of Israel' keeps growing as they keep 'claiming' more and more land by force.

The issue that is there now is that so many people that live in this fabricated culture of Israel are not the oppressors. There are good people on either side. Yes, there are also those that keep on fighting and keep on defending.

If both sides were to simply stop fighting and shake hands - Palestinians would lose out. Either way, they have lost. The Palestinians fight a fight they cannot win and yet they fight anyway.

A friend was doing a documentary a few years ago on the genocide of her grandfather's village in Palestine (now Israel). The gravity of what has been done to make Israel what it is today cannot be forgiven lightly. Where is the accountability for the blood spilled with no respect for anyone but themselves and their 'master race theology' hoping to claim their 'homeland'. Yet many of the the Israelis living in what is now known as Israel are largely innocent (they are not directly responsible and having been themselves born into the conflict). I also have Israeli friends and they have a good spirit.

A true solution would be to give a portion of the land back - at least half of what the Palestinians originally occupied, then the Palestinians would have to forgive - the Israelis would have to forgive as well for the bombings and all the violence done to them but with all that history - the cause and effect is clear. It is not a solution to simply ask the Israelis to leave because there are millions there now integrated into this culture which has been prepared for them.

To simply ask everyone to get along, shake hands, hug and live - is ignorant as to the situation. It is a shit situation.

Why exactly this nation state was required by the powers that be? I do not know. But it is part of the greater plan for world dominion.

What a fucked up world we live in. I hope a solution can be found but it will take both sides to stand down and look at the situation with empathy. With certain beliefs that make the opposition into the opposite of God's children - the war is set to last for as long as there are Palestinians.

Wao, this is amazing.. I just wonder when this countries will stop antagonising each other because it becoming too rampant

The Babylon Bee reference was great. I've never seen that.

I hope this is not a sign of any war because I don't see the reason for such explosion to occur in the sky. The photos taken is really nice because it is such a great capture.

We are totally against this thing because war should not happen. Whenever it happens, there is a lot of damage. People's lives are destroyed. Cities are destroyed. Countries are destroyed. I spoke to people there who were very worried about the way we saw the goods war in Akran a while ago. These things should not happen at all. Both countries should sit down Solve every problem by talking. Every problem can be solved by talking.

If we didn't defend ourselves we'd be dead and we're not leaving our home and the land on which our entire culture and civilisation was born.

The world is not a very stable place lately.

Jerusalem is a holy city. War is not desirable here at all. However, the way Israel is attacking Palestinians (Al-Aqsa Mosque) is not desirable at all. As the place is a holy city for several religions, I wish for peace and not war there.

The only people who shot a rocket at Al-Aqsa this week were Arabs in Gaza.
