Where fish are born

The overturning of the common belief is that most species of fish could find their birthplace in coral reefs, is a recent research that shows that the rate of speciation is higher in cold seas than that of higher latitudes.

The work published on Nature documentaries that have the highest rates of specification which may be found in the coldest and apparently the most hostile seas. Obviously, this does not necessarily imply a higher number of species in general, as this depends on the difference between the birth rate and rate of extinction of the different species, which remains higher in tropical areas. However, it is curious to observe that the more "extreme" conditions stimulated per speciation, probably due to the particular adaptations that the organisms has to develop to in order to survive.

New investigations for “Alien life form”

A new expedition to Antarctica will involve the study into the life forms trapped under the ice of the continent. The present life forms will provide valuable information to understand , how did life establish and develop, in hostile environments.

Imagine CC0 Creative Commons - Source

The following research will focus in particular on the study of the brines, very salty water masses that are usually trapped between the ice. In these sort of environments there are forms of life that have developed the ability to face extremely cold temperatures. Researchers’ will study the bacteria present within samples, and sequence their DNA. It will be important to evaluate the real possibility of the survival of a frozen celestial bodies (like the moons of Jupiter or Saturn),in an ability to try to understand how life can developed in apparently unfavorable conditions.

A kidney grown in vitro

Thanks to techniques derived from 3D printing, it was possible to reproduce in vitro the basic structures for the correct functioning of the kidney. The study was conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Genoa.

Thanks to a mathematical model that describe the structure of the kidney, and using a 3D printer, the researchers managed to create "scaffolding" of the same size and shape as the kidney tubules, including the various ramifications present in a kidney. Thanks to these structures it was possible to guide the development of renal cells in vitro, obtaining an object very similar to a true kidney. This construction technique will be used to study the diseases, and could be a starting point for the development of techniques that allow to reproduce the entire organ.

The continuing evolution of mosquito nets may spell the end of suffering from mosquito-borne diseases by @nonzerosum

Imagine CC BY-SA 3.0 - Source

Mosquitos, as well as other parasites, are among the main vectors for a lot of diseases that can affect humans. Still today, some of these diseases are difficult to treat or particularly hard to bear. @nonzerosum explains how the best way to treat and prevent them is to try to intervene directly on the vector, and not on the pathology itself.

Dove nascono i pesci

Imagine CC0 Creative Commons - Source

Imagine CC0 Creative Commons - Source
