The face of emotions
We often hear that mankind has the innate ability to "read" the emotions of others simply by looking at the faces of the people around him. A recent research, however, seems to suggest another truth.

According to a recent article published in Nature Human Behavior, the way in which each of us perceives the emotions of others is not univocal, but linked to a series of totally subjective preconceptions. The researchers have used a complicated method to analyze the reactions of some people facing some expressions that are commonly linked to certain emotions; results showed that different people perceive the "physical signals" in very different ways.
The devoured galaxy
The galaxy of Andromeda, the closest to the Milky Way, destroyed another galaxy very similar to ours, billions of years ago. The traces of this cosmic process are found today in the halo of stars that surrounds Andromeda.

Clashes between galaxies are common in the universe and Andromeda has certainly absorbed many smaller galaxies. The novelty is the discovery that the great halo of stars that surrounds the galaxy, has almost entirely originated from a single galaxy that has now disappeared. From the study of this halo, it has been possible to trace some characteristics of the absorbed galaxy. The researchers found that it was the third galaxy of the Local Group in size, after the Milky Way and Andromeda. Scientists do not rule out that the M32 galaxy, which orbits around Andromeda, may be the remaining core of the old devoured galaxy.
The Neanderthals fire
A study carried out on numerous findings dating back to 50,000 years ago shows that even the Neanderthal man knew how to light the fire, thus demonstrating that our distant relatives were less dependent on natural events.

That the Neanderthals used fire is a fact known for a long time. Less clear was if they could turn it on using tools, or if they got it from natural sources like lightning-fired wood. The microscopic analysis of the finds (in particular sharp rocks), shows that on them there are signs of repeated percussion against another material, pyrite. This shows that the Neanderthals were able to ignite the fire independently, without the help of nature.

Secondo un articolo appena pubblicato su Nature Human Behaviour il modo in cui ciascuno di noi percepisce le emozioni degli altri non è univoco, ma legato a una serie di preconcetti totalmente soggettivi. I ricercatori hanno utilizzato un complicato metodo per analizzare le reazioni di alcune persone davanti ad alcune espressioni che vengono comunemente ricollegate a determinate emozioni; i risultati hanno dimostrato che persone diverse percepiscono i “segnali fisici” in modi anche molto diversi.
La galassia divorata
La galassia di Andromeda, la più vicina alla Via Lattea, ha distrutto, miliardi di anni fa, un’altra galassia molto simile alla nostra. Le tracce di questo processo cosmico, si trovano oggi nell’alone di stelle che circonda Andromeda.

Gli scontri tra galassie sono comuni nell’universo e Andromeda, nel corso del tempo, ha certamente assorbito numerose galassie minori. Questa volta, la novità, sta nella scoperta che il grosso alone di stelle che circonda la galassia si sia quasi interamente originato da un’unica galassia oggi scomparsa. Dallo studio di questo alone, è stato possibile risalire ad alcune caratteristiche della galassia assorbita. I ricercatori hanno scoperto che era la terza galassia del Gruppo Locale per dimensioni, dopo la Via Lattea ed Andromeda. Gli scienziati non escludono che la galassia M32, che orbita attorno ad Andromeda, possa essere il nucleo rimasto della vecchia galassia divorata.
Il fuoco dei Neanderthal
Uno studio effettuato su numerosi reperti risalenti a 50000 anni fa, dimostra che anche l’uomo di Neanderthal sapeva accendere il fuoco, dimostrando così che i nostri lontani parenti erano meno dipendenti dagli eventi naturali.

Che i Neanderthal usassero il fuoco è una cosa nota da molto tempo. Meno chiaro era se sapessero accenderlo utilizzando degli utensili, oppure se lo ricavassero da fonti naturali come il legno incendiato dai fulmini. L’indagine al microscopio sui reperti (in particolare rocce di forma appuntita), mostra che su di essi sono presenti segni di ripetute percussioni contro un altro materiale, la pirite. Questo dimostra che i Neanderthal sapevano accendere autonomamente il fuoco, senza aiuti fortuiti della natura.
