Crackdown for CRISPR
Imagine CC0 Creative Commons - SourceA new regulation by the European Court in the field of genetic engineering risks severely limiting the use of CRISPR, a genetic engineering technique that is revolutionizing the way DNA is modified by organisms. The new regulation states that DNA modification via CRISPR and the insertion of exogenous DNA into an organism is equivalent to the law, while they are obviously not equivalent from a scientific point of view. Many researchers’ will, therefore, face problems and limitations, due to a regulation based on incorrect scientific assumptions.
Last act for Planck
The latest version of the Planck satellite data, revised and corrected, has just been published. It contains very precise information on the cosmic microwaves radiation, that is the first light emitted by the Universe 380,000 years after the Big Bang. Data analysis reveals that the current standard model of cosmology, which describes the evolution of the Universe from the Big Bang, is very accurate, except in the predictions the values of Hubble are constant, which describes the expansion speed of the Universe.

The authors of the study examined the behavior of light when it interacts with a semiconductor layer (gallium nitride doped with germanium), discovering unexpectedly that the electron-hole couplings interact with the electrons that surround them.

The WHO has recently decided to treat natural aging as a disease; for some, this is a ethical problem, because trying to cure a natural process like this might seem similar to aggressive treatments; but old age is an important risk factor contributing to many diseases, and often drastically reduces people's quality of life... Treating it as a disease could help to limit its’ discomfort.

Imagine CC0 Creative Commons - SourceUn nuovo regolamento della Corte Europea in materia di ingegneria genetica rischia di limitare fortemente l’utilizzo di CRISPR, una tecnica di ingegneria genetica che sta rivoluzionando il modo con cui si modifica il DNA degli organismi. Il nuovo regolamento stabilisce che la modifica del DNA tramite CRISPR e l’inserimento di DNA esogeno in un organismo sono equivalenti da un punto di vista giuridico, mentre non lo sono ovviamente da un punto di vista scientifico. Tanti ricercatori si troveranno quindi ad affrontare problemi e limitazioni dovuti ad un regolamento basato su presupposti scientifici errati.
Ultimo atto per Planck
L’ultima versione dei dati del satellite Planck, riveduta e corretta, è appena stata pubblicata. Contiene informazioni molto precise sulla radiazione cosmica di fondo, la prima luce emessa dall’Universo 380.000 anni dopo il Big Bang. L’analisi dei dati rivela che l’attuale modello standard della cosmologia, che descrive l’evoluzione dell’Universo dal Big Bang ad oggi, è molto accurato. L’unico dato in disaccordo con le previsione è quello della costante di Hubble, che descrive la velocità di espansione dell’Universo.

Sono state trovate tracce di una possibile nuova quasiparticella, un oggetto fisico formato dall’interazione tra due o più particelle che si comportano come se fossero una sola. Gli autori dello studio hanno esaminato il comportamento della luce quando interagisce con uno strato di semiconduttore (nitruro di gallio drogato con germanio), scoprendo che gli accoppiamenti elettrone-lacuna interagiscono in modo inaspettato con gli elettroni che li circondano.

L’OMS ha recentemente deciso di trattare il naturale invecchiamento come una malattia; questo rappresenta per alcuni una sorta di problema etico, in quanto cercare di curare una processo del genere potrebbe apparire simile all’accanimento terapeutico; eppure, la vecchiaia è un importante fattore di rischio per molte malattie, e spesso riduce drasticamente la qualità della vita delle persone… Trattarla come una malattia potrebbe contribuire a limitarne i disagi.
