Queer Kid Stuff

Watch at your own risk.

In case you don't know the nature of my blog, this YouTube channel is not satirical. Meet Lindsay, the creator of Queer Kid Stuff. I felt very uncomfortable while watching this video and you'll see why when I type more.

To make it clear, in case you've haven't noticed this from my other posts, this content did not make me uncomfortable because it was more liberal in content. It made me uncomfortable in the same way making kids quote long, complex Bible passages without explanation makes me uncomfortable. This video comes off as indoctrination rather than education, mainly because it uses basic principles to justify teaching kids about concepts of identity that they don't need to grapple with.

Noticeable, persistent gender dysphoria at the target audience's age would be such an anomaly that it would need to be dealt with by the teacher, the kids, and the parents individually. Even so, some kids this age have LGBT loved ones and mostly go with it without any need for explanation. A kid's idea of normal is not influenced by society at large, but by their home and educational environment. One of the two times I think a child this age would need any explanation is if one of their loved ones were transitioning to the opposite sex. In that case, explanations should be given on an individual basis to suit the child's needs.

A child who is raised in a more conservative environment that is not as accepting of bi, gay, trans, or intersex people may need some explanation too. As I stated before, the explanation should be tailored to their specific situation and personality and that comes with dealing with more challenging questions from more intelligent children. This doesn't mean we need to abolish gender roles, but start off with the basic idea that people are individuals. Learning the rules and exceptions to the rules will come later when life becomes more complicated, but for now, let kids be kids.

This is not to say that I am against children's media that addresses serious and sometimes controversial topics. Heck, I probably learned more from TV than I did from school. However, there is a difference between learning and rote memory repetition. (Brave New World-esque hypnopedia, anyone?) The way this video is phrased sounds like the latter. This channel talks about things that kids don't really need to learn about in a way that's too political for comfort.
