Standing on Cerro Paranal outside the city of Antofagasta is the world famous Paranal Observatory.
About 75% of the most advanced observatories in the world are based in Chile, and most of these are based in the northern Desert of Atacama. This specific observatory is home to the most advanced optical telescope in the world. I had been told that the site operates tours on the weekends - and to my surprise these tours are completely free.
