Quality Life

Ok, so we know that to effectively focus for success, we must give attention to the most important thing, often to the exclusion of other things that have lesser importance. And, for the most part, when you see the word success, you may be thinking about business, and there is nothing wrong with that. But, we have business and personal goals, that are important to us in different ways.

For example, while raising small children, the most important thing may be quality time teaching and playing. And, no one can deny that if you miss this opportunity, if you miss teaching and playing while the children are young, you lose out forever.

At the same time, you want to excel in business so that you will have the money to treat your family to the things they deserve. The business focus for success one thing is going to take precious time from the personal or family focus for success one important thing. How can you resolve this issue and satisfy both values?

A Simple Solution

In The One Thing*, Keller describes essentially taking turns with priorities. I interpreted that as you must focus on the one thing in alternating fashion. For example, if work is at a critical apex, you may need to spend more time on the one business thing. And, lessor time on the one family or personal thing. In effect, this becomes a constant juggling of priorities, the one thing for personal and the one thing for the family.

You may say that this is not a perfect solution and I would not disagree with you. But consider that today, we are more specialized than ever. We rely on others for food and clothing and we may be in finance or construction or really anything. And, there is a cost to this specialization. We must work to provide and therefore we have at least one bifurcation, the work-life balance.
