This week I had the pleasure of taking my daughter to see the new Ghostbusters movie due to a student free day from school. Let me say I didn’t have very high expectations for the movie but it was actually a good laugh and having Chris Hemsworth feature didn’t hurt either.
We arrived at the cinema with 20 minutes to spare, more than enough time to get tickets, popcorn and still have a great choice of seats. The cinema wasn’t full, so people coming in had no reason to sit crammed together and considering it was mid-day and mid-week no one was expecting the cinema to be packed.
The lights dim and the previews start, probably 15 min into the actual movie (so a good 30 min since the lights went down) a family walks in talking loudly with crunching packets with no regard for anyone that was in the cinema on time. They proceed to walk half way up the cinema in the centre isle to where we were sitting and plonk themselves down right next to my daughter. No courtesy seat between them, no keeping their voices down whilst talking amongst themselves. Oh but wait it gets even better, they then decide to open all their snacks and argue about who chose what and who’s sharing what. **SERIOUSLY!!!**
Sadly, not the first time I have witnessed this and it’s just plain rude. Cinema etiquette in my opinion requires you to be seated **BEFORE** the lights go down, if you happen to run a little late and you walk into a dark cinema you scurry to the first available seats quickly and quietly trying not to cause a distraction for the people that were there on time.
What’s with sitting right next to someone when the cinema is pretty empty and it not assigned seating? At least leave one seat between you and the person that was sitting there first, if not for any other reason than its nice to have the whole armrest to yourself.

Amen to you @theshell - nothing irritates me more than noisy patrons. There should be ejector seats for them!
I've seen this all my life. I've always thought that the problem with the world was people. Now, that's generalizing, and perhaps a bit harsh. But anyway, now I stay in my comfortable home and enjoy everything on a nice screen-sound setup. I can eat anything I want. My own good food and snacks. Not strange food in the dark. I can use my own restroom. Depending on what I'm watching, I can probably pause it, for whatever reason, to answer the phone or whatever. Oh, how about being able to still use your phone for the 2 hours. And best of all, I don't ever, never, have to put up with the rudeness, callousness, and insensitivity of crazy and rude people.
This idea that we always need to go out is a ridiculous one sold to us by those who benefit from us constantly going and spending and wasting money for their benefit. Yet we think it's a social thing. Something that we have to do, to stay mentally healthy or whatever. Well, was your experience mentally healthy for you or your child. And I'm truly sorry that it was not. I've been there.
And speaking of kids. This idea that kids should be going out all the time is the exact same thing sold to us. And even more so. Let's not even start on how they use kids to get families to part with their hard-earned money. And speaking of wasting money. How about how much it costs to take a family out, to the movies, or theater, a music concert or whatever. Do the math. And especially with movies. Because that's an experience that can easily be recreated at home. After all , it all takes place in the dark. With a single screen and some sound. So set yourself up nicely, all of you out there. Get the kids to help you make their favorite snacks before the movie. Get some drinks ready. And maybe even popcorn and movie type candy. Turn the lights down, and the sound up. Enjoy. Joke and laugh together. Or even if you're alone. That's even better. Set yourself up the same way. And enjoy your own company. And a good movie. And save your money. And save your sanity. Sometimes it not worth it. All the effort. The going there. The getting back. The fatigue. The stress. No more. Let us all free ourselves from these behavioral ideas instilled into us before we even understood what it all means. Were they meant to keep us all poor and miserable? Well, they won't. Enjoy all. Love, peace. And soul train.

as a videographer... i pay more attention to sound, that the picture itself... And movies, are succesfull from a perfect music backround that the actors themselves... Doing all that noise, they actually remove the 80% of the joy... from themselves.. when watching the movie... and even dissrespecting the whole crew that made that movie... what the heck... they even waisted their money... cause it they were quiet the would be 100% satisfied...

Yeah, cinema etiquette has definitely deteriorated over the years. It makes you enjoy watching things at home with your family but there's nothing like the big screen and surround sound of a movie theater.

The experience of dealing with noisy people in the cinema can be incredibly frustrating and irritating. It can really detract from the enjoyment of the movie and can make it difficult to concentrate.
