After months of battle, the casualties of war had taken its toll and the scars ran deep on all sides. Among his group, the men were tired, some gave up and some betrayed the old man, one of his most trusted advisors, luckily, the old man could sense this in time and made contingencies.

Excellent choice of words and complementary imagery.
