Market Friday: villagers paying respect to the Nagas,

in #marketfriday4 years ago (edited)

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the compassionate and generous @dswigle. This year has been very hot and dry and the rain didn’t come in January as usual. Last year the elderly villagers and my gardener care together at my place to perform a simple ceremony for paying respect to the Naga. But this year I had been so busy that they thought I forgot all about it. So, a few weeks ago, I told them to come for a ceremony by the river.

Last year we had three of the oldest villagers to help out with the ceremony. But this year two were not feeling well as they are over eighty years old. So, my gardener took the leading role in preparing the fruits, food, flowers and essential tools for the ceremony. I supported them by paying for all the expenses and providing all the tools for setting everything up.

These villagers took the ceremony very seriously as they grew up within a culture embedded with stories about Nagas and their magical power. Nagas (mystical water snakes) were mentioned in Buddhist Scripture and according to the old texts, there were four tribes of Nagas: the golden, green, rainbow and black colours tribes. They lived in the mountains, rivers and caves. They could transform into human forms and walk among people without being detected. People believe that if they pay respect to the magical and powerful Nagas, they could bless them with good fortune. Nagas’ land is believed to be full of gold and precious jewelries. They have been many stories about people becoming rich because of Naga’s magical help.

These villagers were very excited and happy to have this ceremony by the river. They helped each other carrying all the stuff from my house. I played the chanting music for the ceremony with my iPad and a small loud speaker. The drought was quite stark with very low level of water in the river. I wish we could have more rain as all the trees were crying for rain and the dry earth started to show signs of cracking. These villagers were praying and beseeching the guardian of the river, the Nagas to help them with their livelihood and bring them prosperity. These people are very simple and naturally unrefined which I find very refreshing when comparing with sophisticated and complicated city folks.

There were two sets of food and fruits: the one on the table was for the Nagas, the tray on the ground was for the Spirits of the land. Nagas are vegetarians and they are very strict practitioners of Buddhism as they aspire to accumulate lots of good karmas to be reincarnated as humans in their next life. The Buddha caught a handsome young man (a Naga Prince in disguise) trying to join an ordination ceremony for becoming monks.

He had been secretly listening to the Buddha’s teaching and he was so inspired that he wanted to become a monk. But only men could become ordained as a monk. The Buddha told him to leave the ceremony as he was not human. He pleaded with the Lord Buddha that he wished to become enlightened according to Buddhist teaching. But, being a water snake (though with lots of magic), did not qualify for ordination. So, he asked the Lord Buddha if people would call young men who were in white robe with shaven heads ‘Naga’ as a reminder of his serious intention to become a monk. Since that time, we still call these young men with shaven heads and white robes ‘Nak’ in Thai language today. I do hope that the original Naga had already reincarnated as a man, became a monk and subsequently became enlightened thousands of years ago. So, the younger generations of Nagas would continue to accumulate good karma for future transformation and enlightenment.

That makes for a nice #fruitandveggies monday post. They sure know how to arrange an altar :-)

Thank you very much! That’s a nice contest on Monday.

Good to see you here too.

This is such a wonderful piece of ceremonial culture. I loved it and I admire the way you presented it and these women who helped make this yearly ceremony, by paying respect to the Naga. I find it very touching the respect that is paid and I find it very similar to some of the customs that have grown out of favor with more sophisticated individuals, but, still remain a part of life to my elders.

I am sure I will be in their place one day, but, in the meantime, I want to keep those customs intact. They are part of ours, and to lose these would be a travesty.

Thank you for such a wonderful #MarketFriday, always so well written and factual. Bless you and yours as we navigate these troubled waters right now.

Be well. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Also, please practice proper social distancing. Love to you.

#MarketFriday loves you!

Thank you so much for keeping me safe in your prayer. That’s really very warming and reassuring too.

I am beginning to get in touch with the ‘raw’ or ‘natural’ side of villagers’ psyche. They are in touch with nature just like the Red Indians. Everything seems to have a spirit connecting to Mother Earth. Most old villagers are also psychic and some are mediums, some are old style medicine doctor.

Praying all will be fine soon.

Take care and big hugs!

Oh! Yes! I see!

Thank you!

Howdy sir kaminchan! What an interesting story about the Nagas and also very educational about them with the ceremony. I hope the rains come back.

Thank you very much! Yes, it rained for three days, a few hours per day! My gardener was very happy!

Cheers.

Very good sir kaminchan, that is great news!

Wow - what a gorgeous post - it made my heart smile.

Following you from the ricefields of Mae Rim in Chiang Mai - 17 years living here in the North and I have a beautiful luek kreung daughter. 😍 Discovered you through the @OCD curation just now! 😊

Stay safe & healthy.

Thank you very much for your kind comment and encouragement.

So, you are now half-Thai and half-farang!! Haha! You certainty have lots of stamina and patience to be able to put up with Thai idiosyncrasies!

Chiengmai is quite nice; most of my older friends are living there. You are full of energy and productive creativities. I will try out that kimchi recipe! Must find a glass jar first!

Hope you'll do very well in all your projects!!

Cheers.

Yes, more than half Thai already. I SPEAK Thai fairly well but my reading and writing anubaan 2 level. LOL. Thai idiosyncrasies are mostly good - when they're not I just tell people I have a Thaigraine and I stay quiet, at home alone, for a day. It passes. 😆 Thailand is a wonderful country and I am blessed to be here. Even with AQI in Chieng Mai off the charts today. 😭 😷

Oh! Wow! I am impressed how you could manage all these cross cultural things! Even I had troubles with these cultural intricacies myself! LoL

Shame about the air pollution there! People just wouldn’t stop bad habits!! Bad karma for them too!

Stay safe and healthy.
