The power of association is without question, and it is so strong to determine the course of your life. You will be surprised how just being close to great people can transform your mindset. One of the things that I have understood about the power of association is that the greatest value of walking with good people is not necessarily about what you will get from them, rather it is becoming a better person simply by their influence. Your friends have a lot of influence on both your present and your future in ways you may not even understand. Your dominant association is part of what determines your direction in life. When you walk with great people, you will be enroute to greatness.
The people you stay often with will determine how you think, how you act, your behaviour, your habit, and your attitude, which will form the basis of your character, and will also determine what becomes of your life. You cannot soar like an eagle if you hang around chickens. You may not know it but the fact remains that everyone you meet has an atmosphere surrounding them - this includes a mindset, an energy, and even a belief system. So when you stay with them a while, they will begin to transfer this energy to you, and you will see yourself replicating their personality. This is why, when you stay with smokers for long, your body will begin to smell of their smoke. And the more you stay around them, the easier it will be to join them in their smoking.
When you spend time or stay around people, you tend to absorb their patterns. I remember sometimes ago, there was this particular guy who I met when I was doing a vacation job during the school holidays some years back. I noticed something about him, and that was what triggered our friendship. He was visionary and a go-getter. There was a positive drive that he radiated. Anytime you stay with him, you will be motivated to pursue after your dream. In fact, just by staying with him briefly during the job, I was motivated to learn a new skill because of how he talked about it. This was when I understood that people are mirrors - you tend to reflect the people who you stay with.
When you take a look at the great achievers in history and read about their story, you will be surprised to know that most, if not all, of them are made by network of good relationship that inspired, motivated, and supported them. For example; Orville Wright had his brother Wilbur Wright, and both of them teamed up to achieve greatness with their invention of the airplane. Even in the corporate world, you tend to succeed more when you have connected with other forward-thinking people. No wonder it has been said that "your net worth is in direct proportion to your network." If you stay with people who think and go forward, you will be prompted to think and go forward.
I once listened to a friend during his motivational speech and he made a very insightful statement. He said "your friendship will either help you to grow or hold you back from growing." Trust me, there is no association that you are in that will leave you the same way. Learn to surround yourself with people who will become a positive addition to you and who will make you to grow, not people who will welcome your excuses and make you remain in your comfort zone. You need people that will look at you and say "I believe in you, it is possible to achieve your dream." This will motivate you to take more steps and to persist until the result is gotten.
Once in a while, try to take out time to evaluate your friendships to know the ones that are positive additions to you and the ones to cut off. Any friendship or association that is not adding positively to you will either be subtracting from you or adding negatively to you, there is no neutrality. You have to understand that it is not a force to be in an association or friendship with anyone, it is purely a product of the choices you make. The choice of friendship that you make today will be what will either make your destiny or mar it. So choose who to walk with, and choose wisely.
