This last weekend, I watched The Old Guard, a 2020 movie on Netflix about being immortal. If you are a fan of The Highlander movies, this is similar to the first in which Connor MacLeod discovers he is immortal. Or, perhaps more adequately, Highlander: The Series in which Duncan MacLeod mentors Richie Ryan who has recently become immortal. I want to express my impression of the movie without giving away the plot.
Overall, the story is good enough to make a movie. Obviously, immortality must be kept secret. Like any strange medical condition, life gets weird if people know you can't die or age. The protagonist of this movie is Andy, played spectacularly by Charlize Theron. The rest of the cast also do an excellent job as supporting characters. It reminds me of Extraction with Chris Hemsworth, also a 2020 Netflix movie that is high energy action.
The antagonist is played by Harry Melling, which you my recognize from the Harry Potter films. Melling plays an evil pharmaceutical company CEO. I found that the way the character was written was a bit over the top. It would have been more effective if the character were more cold and reserved in his evil. But, that's just my opinion.
The Old Guard feels like a movie in which the story is only useful in that it allows the production to highlight their skills in cinematography, acting, and stunt coordination. You watch this movie because it is a fun watch rather than watching it for deeper meaning. What it lacks in depth it makes up in rewatchability. They do a good job, however, of creating enough backstory to be able to flesh out the world. The Old Guard does set itself up, through a series of flashbacks and a callback at the end, for a sequel. If they do get around to making a second movie, it would be worth the watch.
