I'm trying to write earlier in the day. Before breakfast is actually the best time for me to write, but four in the afternoon will have to do.
I was reminded this morning that it's George Gershwin's birthday today.
I don't know why "But Not For Me" popped into my head immediately to share - perhaps because it's simple and versatile and feels very Sunday to me. Certainly nothing to do with my lack of success in love :)
To see how versatile and Sunday-is, pick any Sunday (some of you can do it today!) and start with this nice peppy version (it's jokey and light on the emotion) - good to play while putting the Sunday dinner on.
Whereas the Ella version is more for later on today, perhaps while you're doing the ironing or something.
Keep Judy Garland's in your back pocket for when it gets dark later and you're fending off heartbreak with a single malt - guaranteed to push you over the edge.
Anyway, I always loved the "more skies of grey, than any Russian play" bit (thanks Ira!)
