The Wasted Years

666 is the number of the Beast!

Growing up in the 80's there was no band more influential than Iron Maiden. As a kid in 4th grade jacking my big brother's music, I was a metal head, while all of my peers were New Ro, New Wave, etc. I loved the speed, the fury of metal. It fit perfectly with my BMX adventures in suburbia. I had IRON MAIDEN on all my book covers & Pee Chee folders.

Iron Maiden was like no other metal band. Before Metallica hit it big, before Whitesnake(hahahah), Lady Gaga, etc. Maiden was shredding across the entire globe and pissing off Tipper Gore.

While doing a little research I came across this hilarious video of kids reacting to the good, 80's Maiden tunes. Check it out!

In my opinion Maiden peaked in 1986 with the album Somewhere In Time. Every tune on it is fantastic. The engineering on it, the instrument playing, everything was perfect. I mean, they wrote a song about the Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner and a fucking 8 minute song about Alexander The Great that made you want to be a soldier in Alexander's army!

My favorite song on Somewhere In Time has to be The Wasted Years right now. It really hits home with lyrics like "I close my eyes and I think of home, Another city goes by in the night, Ain't it funny how it is? You never miss it til' it's gone away
And my heart is lying there, will be 'til my dying day."

Then there was Eddie, Maiden's mascot. An 10' tall zombie demon? Their album cover's in the 80's all featured Eddie in some form or another and continue to this day. It was really cool at the time and edgy. Then they made a version of him and brought him on tour!

Besides the Wasted Years Maiden had so many good tunes, Run To The Hills, Powerslave, The Trooper, all powerful and many with a history or philosophy lesson tossed in.

So understand, Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years
Face up, make your stand and Realize you're living in the golden years.....
I'll end with one more awesome tune many of us can relate to, Stranger In A Strange Land. Have an awesome weekend!

We had no time for music as we were growing up! It’s always study, study and study!! Hahaha. Luckily, I did manage to listen to adult radio channel where they played oldie music! Children listened according to the adults’ favourite radio stations! LoL

That's interesting Kamin. Music is integral to growing up in the US. Maybe a bit too extreme these days though as people literally walk around in stores with their cell phones playing loud music. Maybe I should do the same, but blast some Iron Maiden songs.
