in #musiclast month

Altan is an Irish folk band formed in 1987 in Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland by highly talented Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and her husband Frankie Kennedy. They sold more than 1 million records throughout their career and have been greatly influenced by local Irish folk songs from County Donegal. Among others, Altan have collaborated with other great artists such as Enya, Bonnie Raitt, or Alison Krauss.

Aside from lead vocals, Mairéad also plays the fiddle. Throughout their lengthy career spanning approximately 34 years to date, Altan managed to release 13 studio albums, 1 live album, and 5 compilations.

Below you can listen to Mairéad talking about the story behind one of Altan's songs, more specifically 'Gleanntáin Ghlas' Ghaoth Dobhair' in her native language, the most beautiful beautiful Gaelic Irish (with English subtitles).

And down below you can listen to this beautiful Irish folk song from County Donegal. Enjoy!
