Pasteli- Ancient Greek Candy Bars

Ancient Greek candy bars, made of sesame seeds and honey. I made them vegan and used agave syrup instead of honey.

Oh my gosh this reminds me of my childhood. My health nut father wouldn't let me have candy but he did let me have sesame snaps. I loved them so much. These are even a hundred times better. I love agave nectar as a honey substitute. This is the perfect snack. I have to do this to take to work for some quick energy. Hmm toasted sesame.

Your health nut father was so right! 😃
Pasteli were mentioned in Homer's Iliad, warriors were eating them to gain energy and power for the battle, so taking them to work would be totally appropriate! 😄

I just looove sesame seed bars but the ones I've been buying are made with honey, have not tried making them myself and have not seen agave syrup around. Looks soooo good, I love anything nutty and sweet! I'm an incorrigible sweet tooth🙈

I'm a sweet tooth as well 😂
Almond syrup would also work, or thick syrup made of sugar. These are just the easiest candy bars I know, simply made just with sesame and syrup. 🙂

These would be a hit in Cambodia, lots of similar snacks there. I honestly didn't Greek cuisine even made use of sesame seeds, so this is a pleasant surprise. I bet these things are delicious. Thanks for sharing this with us and participating in the challenge.

Random factoid, my tiny little farmtown back in the USA had/has a Greek candy shop for years and years, one of the oldest businesses in town. When I was a kid, the place had already fallen out of good times, and the guy let his cats roam all over the place, closed the place to the public, and supposedly sold only online. This place is where Dave Thomas got the idea for Wendy's, as the story goes, because in the place's prime it had burgers, milkshakes, etc, and was the hopping place in town.

That's a funny story, so Wendy's roots are actually Greek! 😃
Pasteli supposed to be on the menu of Greeks and in Middle East already about 6000 years ago and it's simplicity works amazing. 😋

I can smell the sesame fragrance right now just looking at the pictures hmmmm so yummy

Sesame is really star of this dish :)
