It had been a while that she baked a cake. He was returning home after a lot of years. She was not sure how many. It was too painful to recollect, sometimes. Nobody would ever understand her pain and why she had to take that decision that changed their lives so drastically.
As she set about to measure the ingredients, she recollected those happy days when he would help her cook and made sure she was comfortable and he would be the first to taste her dishes.
She went about mixing the butter and sugar. Sudden flashes of the past awoke her emotions and she remembered the day that it happened. She was happy and had gone to her office as usual. The maid had told her that she would stay back to look after grandma. He had left earlier. She had entrusted the maid and not suspected anything. She knew that the maid was very honest.
Then what had gone wrong that day?
A few hours into that day and she had received a phone call from her neighbor. She rushed back home. Her neighbor was also her best friend and she had closed the front door of the apartment. Thinking that her husband and the maid had an affair, the neighbor who was nosy had locked the door. With a look of triumph, the neighbor opened the door but instead of discovering ashamed faces, they saw that her husband and the maid were standing along with the doctor who had come to check up on grandma who was not well. She felt faint and the neighbor withdrew without anyone noticing.
There were no explanations given. Nobody even cared to listen. Grandma was moved to the hospital and he did not even allow her to visit. The maid did not come back and he soon left with all his belongings. She lived all alone and had very few relatives so explanations were spared. The neighbor also moved house.
So, why now?
He had met her neighbor who confessed her ill-doing and she had told him that his wife was innocent. He felt remorse and had called her to apologize. He wanted to meet her.
The cake was done. She waited for him to come. She wondered if he would have remarried and had children.
The doorbell rang and he stared into the face of a teenage boy who looked like him. He stood in shock as the boy called out to his mom.

Sometimes a mistake from one side broke a good relationship . It's very hard for the other person who is innocent . But both have to pay the price .
