dickturpin why?

I used to work in the Hazardous Waste Recycling industry. Some of the chemicals we dealt with were pretty evil, not to mention deadly. One day the fire brigade rang. A fellow recycler (Competitor) had [supposedly] inadvertently offloaded some 45 Gallon drums containing liquid death (I forget the exact chemical now) at a local landfill site, and they needed to be removed and disposed of safely. As an honourable, decent, ethical salesperson, I rubbed my hands together and phoned the competitor.

Me: "Hi Derek. So we need to organise this removal but before I despatch our guys. I wanted to advise you that this is not going to be cheap, and I don't want you to think that because the authorities have asked us to remove them and you have little to no choice that we're exploiting the situation [cough, snigger, cough, splutter]."

Derek: "Go on then, what are we looking at?"

Me: "Well, off the top of my head, about £35,000."

Derek: "HOW MUCH!?"

Me: "Well as you know, I'll have to send a team of Industrial Cleaners, then there's the lorry......"

Cutting across me

Derek: "AT LEAST DICK TURPIN WORE A MASK!" [Expletive removed]

And from that day on my colleagues started calling me Dick Turpin so the nickname kinda stuck.

Sort:

Aha! Makes sense now! Cheers!

hehe nice one! I did a little industrial cleaning at some paper mills back in the day and it was some pretty horrible 12 hour shifts we had to endure.I had no idea what we were doing. lol get the paper out and whack on some degreaser to boiling hot machines with just a paper mache suit to protect us.. never mind the caustic signs all around us! lol

Them were the days. Sadly, there are still cowboy outfits doing it on the cheap.

What a waste! (to quote Ian Dury). Must be some nasty stuff to deal with in that business. But it made you a dandy highwayman!

!BEER

There was a site in Runcorn that every man and his dog had quoted to remove, there were literally thousands of drums some of them bulging ready to explode. The problem was, nobody knew what was in them as most of the drums workers had been tipping a bit of this and a bit of that into them for years and years so it was a cocktail of god-knows-what. I've no idea if it's all still there but I was scared when I went and that was twenty-five years ago and they'd been there over twenty years back then.

It's scary how much stuff is just dumped in landfill or even in the sea. Companies will do what is profitable and dealing with their waste costs too much. Eventually there will be payback for us all.

Oh, I could tell you some horror stories like the well known (Now defunct) waste company that bought a site on top of a mine shaft and then spent the next 50 years literally pouring god-knows-what down the shaft and then capped it with 150ft of concrete. Or the landfill site that had a 500ft slope cut into the waste, a tanker driven into it and then the whole lot buried—Kaboom or what my friend.

I bet there's plenty of horror stories. I know organised crime has been involved in waste disposal and they are not going to follow rules.

We have a landfill up the road and a while back got talking with a tanker driver there. Seems they have to take away loads of run-off water for treatment. It all costs.

Yep. And then there's the constant methane monitoring. A landfill is a terrible idea because it's been proven it doesn't work. It's just basically parking the problem for a couple of hundred years. There's a former site at Tilbury that's started regurgitating its waste https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-40308598 things you've been led to believe rot, in fact, does not. They've found 70-year-old newspapers, for example, still in good condition and perfectly readable.

And then there are the poor sods whose houses have been built on a former landfill. Their homes are worthless.

By now that stuff might be walking!!! 😫😫😫😫

It might explain what Elon Musk is using for fuel. 🚀

True!!! But then he'd already be on Mars?

!PIZZA

I suspect he's from there anyway. 👽

Can't be... He bought all that btc then crashed it. Martians have to be smarter than that 🤣

WOW. Really I liked the tone n style of this post. Really this style suits the personality this Nickname contains. A friendly suggestion. If you try to fine tune this style you can work wonders later.
