Hive Open Mic ( #openmic ) is a global community of music lovers, for music fans and musicians. Each week is a new invitation for expression and connection.
I’m learning how important recreation is. These days, we're literally re-creating life as we know it. We're reawakening, reinventing, realigning... in order to adjust to the new world. For me, this re-creation happens on a daily basis.
I realize I'm taking special liberties with the word recreation, because it inspires me as I'm seeing it means something new to me today. I mean, I understand the advantages of getting out in nature every day, remembering my true nature. Being outdoors gives me clarity, focus, and peace of mind. It helps me to feel fullness of joy and wonder, satisfied that my actions are enough and I don't have to do anything more. I just have to be as I am.
And today, my definition of the word is expanding to mean this: making my life new again. This reimagining, refreshing, renewing... is the kind of creative thinking that is required in this world we live in. It's a brand new world now. Life as we knew it is gone, and here is the unknown. This is the new time, the new paradigm, and the new frontier.
This holiday weekend I'm making recreation my highest priority. Specifically, I intend to play outdoors and play indoors. I'm remembering and respecting my inner child, who so loves to play. I'm refreshing my physical body by walking in the woods, in the sunlight and the moonlight. I'm revitalizing the vibe of my band during this time of social distancing by learning to use a looping station, as you can hear here. It's all new territory to me.

Brave Spirit is the #1 single released by my band: Cosmic Butterflies [And A Bear]. The song is currently available for streaming and digital download: Spotify | Apple Music | Google Play. The music video you see here is one I made a few months ago, back when our band was about to make our debut during the SXSW music festival. The song, the recording, and the video are works of pure love.

Ditto. And thank you, sis. Interesting the way these songs carry different flavors at different times. For example, I think of this song mostly as a natural, old-fashioned folk song to be sung by the campfire, like cowboy poetry, with a quiet flame flickering in the background. Then, when I played it today, I tried to fashion it into something fresh and new, and I failed a dozen times, just to get something shareable. The good news is that it stretched me, so I'm growing as a musician.
I always tell Jose that no matter how much effort we put into trying to communicate something in a song, people are always going to connect with their part of uplifting themselves by listening, and in that moment the song is transformed and no longer yours!
So thank you for sharing this song and allowing me to transform it into something so beautiful for my being by listening to it!
