Rose awoke to the truck rumbling up the onramp to the highway. Morning had come and the group had packed up and left her sleeping. Just as well, she thought. Her tongue felt thick and her head was slightly dizzy. She found a water bottle next to her and had a drink. That made her tongue feel better. She sat up a little straighter and looked around her. She could see signs of the dead, dustpiles, scattered here and there. She wondered how far the light had reached.
"I'm glad you are awake. I have some breakfast for you." said Miss Vivian.
"Thank you," Rose said, accepting the sandwiches Vivian offered her. "Is everyone ok, I was kind of out of it after, well, you know."
"Better than that!" Larry piped in, exuberance filling his drawl. "You saved us but good last night. Whoo! You're a regular secret weapon! Thank God for you, Rose." He was grinning out the windshield like a little boy at Christmas.
The pond at the bottom of the highway ramps was still and silent. There was no movement in the graveyard behind the pond. A shiver ran through Rose at the memories of the wet, decayed bodies smacking on the pavement and against the truck.
Satan smacked his wet hand on the table furiously. He couldn't believe the power this girl had. It was truly remarkable in a human. She mistakenly believed that God was working directly through her, but, that wasn't entirely correct. Gos had bestowed her with abilities, but, because of free will, he couldn't guide them for her, she had to figure them out for herself and she was doing a great job of it to Satan's great dismay. He didn't know God's plan for this little wench, but, he wanted to stop her at any cost. He would not let her stop him from walking the earth again.
