Banning the sale of popular pets at stores

in #petslast year

Clark County in Nevada has recently decided to ban the sale of popular animals at pet stores like dogs, rabbits, and cats. Political authorities there say that pets are not products.

Motivation for the restrictions? It looks like animal welfare, with those behind the move suggesting that there is no humane way to breed pets for the purpose of business like pet store sales. This isn't the only region to consider this move either, you can find similar restrictions on selling animals like kittens and puppies in stores in other regions. You can find this sort of restriction on pet sales going on around the US from NY to Texas, and other areas.

Is this the most effective way to fight animal abuse?

Of course there are many who are worried about the puppy mills or forced breeding with cats and other animals, this is one way that politicians are looking to try and stop those things from happening.

Some businesses have had to let go of workers or close altogether depending on how this change in restrictions surrounding pet sales impacts their business overall.

It's a great idea to adopt a pet but people shouldn't be forced into doing it by having all other options restricted. Not every business selling dogs, cats, or rabbits etc, might be doing it in an abusive way though some might like to argue that this is the case. Who is to stop small scale breeders from violating animals in the same way a big shop might? There is arguably just as much risk there as well. Also not everyone wants to adopt from a shelter when often those pets have been fixed, if they want pets in shelters to be the only market option available then more variety is necessary.
