The mobile animal sterilization clinic in Krabi

in #pets4 years ago

It isn't terribly difficult to understand why the sterilization of homeless animals is priority number one for Krabi Animal Welfare. This is true with nearly every animal welfare organization in the world.

The reasoning is simple: One dog or cat can replicate exponentially and since the stray population is already strained as it is, these urban animals normally end up not getting taken care of and become a public nuisance and therefore they end up getting neglected or abused.

Last year we gathered up nearly 200 stray dogs and cats, sterilized them, and then reintroduced them back to their areas. This is quite a bit more difficult that you might imagine as many of these animals are not very trusting of humans since they have been kicked around most of their lives. The more friendly ones are the ones that are most frequently chosen since we don't have the capacity to get them all anyway.

Of course food is the primary motivator to coax these cats and dogs into the transport kennels and bring them to our makeshift mobile sterilization clinic where several veterinarians have graciously donated their time and expertise to our cause.

With the guidance of long-established Lanta Animal Welfare, we were able to carry this event out over the course of 4 days with relative ease. They were long days of course, but it is really rewarding to be able to know that the end result was likely hundreds if not thousands of animals that would have been brought into a life of hunger and suffering.

All of the animals are given adequate time to recover and are also vaccinated before we drop them back off where we found them. A vast majority of the animals are easy to handle, but occassionally we have problematic or even dangerous dogs. Thankfully, the skilled workers seem to know how to handle any situations.

It seems unlikely that we are going to have the resources to carry out such an operation in 2020. We had hoped to, but with the Corvid-19 crisis, animals have to take a back seat so to speak.. At least for now. Hopefully that can all get sorted out so we can get back to our goals of helping the animals of Krabi. In the meantime were quite happy with the result of last years' drive and look forward to the next one, whenever that time may come.

Really happy to see KBV migrated over here to Hive!!

Hard to know how so many projects will evolve and be managed in a rapidly changing world. Grateful for the helpers you are, and ever hopeful for a green light to travel in the coming months and to see what you're up to in person.

Socially distanced hugs from Chiang Mai.

it was a surprisingly easy process to move over. I am not a technical person so I was expecting issues. Thanks for the kinds words. The lack of travel has severely impacted our ability to operate since most of our funding comes from tourists who see the problem with their own eyes. We'll keep doing out thing no matter what though :)

🤔

it's tragic that they are viewed as such.... certainly not by us. It's just a different culture over here in regards to street animals and I'm not trying to say anything negative about the locals here, they just don't see it as tragic the way that we do....
