Danny the Manny

This was one of the first portraits I ever took after I bought one of my softboxes. I had used remote flashes for a long time, but never really invested in a nice big lighting modifier until a good one popped up on Craigslist for pretty cheap. It was definitely very used, but a great investment. I use it all the time for my portrait work now, and helps create a huge magic light that I wasn't used to back then.

Anyways, this is my good friend Danny. For some reason, this is still one of my favorite portraits I've taken. He wasn't really ready for the shot, and we shot a few more pictures after this one. I honestly don't remember if I sent him the others, because when I went back to edit them this was the one that just stood out to me for some reason. Thankfully he agreed as well. For those of you looking for a graphic designer, take a look at his website and contact him if you need something done! He's an awesome dude, I truly don't think I've ever met anyone who hasn't loved him from the get-go.

I've always been interested in getting some flashes and playing with lighting.. Maybe someday. Nice portrait!

Do it man! You can get Yongnuo (manual) stuff off of Amazon for pretty cheap. Flashes and remote triggers, but they work well if you get used to doing it all manually.

I very well may! Would be cool to play with them in some night landscapes too

Oh yeah, light painting can be really fun. I used to do it a lot more, I should get back into it. Those triggers can be activated from super far away, so you can do some cool dramatic lighting.

That sweater is amazing.

Oh the shot too! But the sweater...daaaamn

:) Craigslist is a great resource for cheap gear

Right? It's actually @theblake's I found out.

Man, i'm digging this and that sweater! haha

Hah thanks dude. And yeah, apart from that thing being really itchy it's pretty rad

He must have agreed to have used it so prominently on his website! :D

Is that an Icelandic sweater?

According to @theblake, it's actually his Dad's..and yes, it's Icelandic wool apparently.

Haha that's awesome!

Its a classic shot. I have never really done any studio work. One day I will hit you up for some studio lessons!

Do it! I'm ready to teach you the tiny bit I know!

In the valley of the blind the one eyed man is king.

If you're blind I would not suggest studio lighting.

In the valley of eternal darkness the man with one strobe is king.

Are you writing a book of wise-sounding one liners? Because I think you should.

The amount of people who go out and buy fancy cameras and then never put any effort into lighting always amazes me.

I like this, it's kinda quirky. I even like the reflection on his glasses.
Makes it looks like he's at work on a computer.
Funny how weird little technical details can change what you get from a photo.

Lighting is an integral part of photography, especially for portrait work. Yeah, it can be kind of surprising how often people don't think about all of the facets of what "good lighting" is, just focus on having expensive gear.

And thanks man, I appreciate that. Glasses can be sooo tricky (at least for me) with big umbrellas, since the light can look great except for the glaring reflection. Glad it works out on this one :)

I'm going to read upnon using lighting modifiers. I really like what you did here.

Thank you! For reference, this is what I did. Had a flash shooting into my softbox, and then a flash behind and to the side to eliminate shadows on the wall, and get a little bit of back lighting. It was in my basement (not an actual cloth background) at Orchard/Drew's old house (if you ever went there?). Messing around with off-camera flash is super fun, but can be really frustrating sometimes too. If you want any recommendations or have any questions, let me know! I can try and help with the tiny bit of knowledge I have.
