Bringing Light into the forgotten - 345 seconds of Color

Spin the underground - Light Painting Adventure.

During that mini MeetUp with Sven Gerad (aka @lichtkunstfoto) and @stepko last weekend we light painted two locations around Berlin.

What you see as the main Light Painting image is a camera rotation of the basement of a dog orphanage. Not super complex but I love the result because the colors really popped. Much more than I expected. Nothing seems symmetrical, because it wasn't. So I did not bother much to look for the perfect alignment. So sorry for another eye twister.

What were the settings here?

The first shot is a 345 seconds single exposure with the camera set to ISO 250 In order to get the cool angle, I used the LAOWA 12mm Zero D F2.8 lens.

This is what the room looked like with simple lighting. Maybe a little yellow because I already had the yellow flashlight in my pocket. This again is to test how much time I have for the exposure and see where I will walk and be safe in the dark. Even this shot is already a 93-second single exposure Light Painting.

Here testing it with the green outside the ruin. Then it started to look really cool and I know this can be awesome.
What do you think?

Was denkt Ihr?

Anyhow!
It was a super cool fun night with friends out in the woods. As the Covid19 numbers are rising here in Germany we are not sure when the next Lockdown will occur so we are super happy to meet up and get some Light Painting done together. Thank you Sven and Stefan (@Stepko)

Camera Rotation what?

Not too long ago I wrote up an article on the topic. It has been published on my website and here on Hive as a blog post.
Camera Rotation belongs certainly to Kinetic photography and it is not a very common technique amongst photographers. Light Paintings are choreographed movements with light tools carried out with the camera during a single exposure. During a Camera Rotation, the light sources are often in a fixed position about the camera, and the light trails are then drawn into the picture solely by the camera movements.

It all comes down to having the camera in different positions or moving “around” during the image. To do so you will need some fixation of your camera. See the image above. There are multiple methods to the madness. As a LightPainter, I would use two major categories. A) Lens is open during the entire Rotation exposure time and B) Closing the lens during the rotation steps and open to imprint the chosen scene. What follows is that people get creative and mix all sorts of methods. But let us look at the first two categories.

See the making of using this technique.

I hope it was also inspirational. If you have more questions please do not hesitate. I am happy to share my knowledge.
