Let Your Eye Follow...
In continuing my series about photography basics, today I want to cover one of my favorite composition techniques - Leading Lines. To put it simply, a leading line is a line in the picture that leads your eye from one part of the scene to another. Sometimes there will be a focal point object at the end of the lines, but more often than not, the lines just lead the viewer to look through the photo instead of at it. In the above photo, you are led from left to right, while in the next photo below, you are led on a meandering journey through the photo. Both are excellent examples of leading lines...

One of the best and most subtle ways of using leading lines is when the lines themselves are not part of a physical object, for example, in the photo below, you can see the lines are actually shadows from the trees, instead of physical objects like the fence and track above. They are still no less effective of achieving the goal of directing the viewers eye towards the trees, as you can see...

Simple, Right?
Really that is all there is to the composition technique of leading lines, it is a fairly simple concept with a myriad of uses in photography. It is easy to use them in say, a railroad track photo, but using them more subtly as in the shadow photo above3 takes some practice and work. Next time you go out to shoot, why not try your hand at leading lines and see what you can do?
