In Which We Say Hello to a Bald Eagle

There are many beautiful and even regal birds, but certainly one of the most well-known majestic birds is the bald eagle.

The national bird of the United States of America since 1782 (and even appearing on the Presidential seal and the one-dollar bill), the bald eagle is truly a fantastic bird of prey!

Of course, the bald eagle isn't really "bald." It gets its name from the white feathers adorning its head, which stand out in stark contrast to its brown and gray body. The bald eagle hunts for its nourishment, and has no natural predator of its own.

They can live for decades in the wild, and have an impressive wingspan of 5-7 feet. They also have the largest nests of any North American bird. One even measured at 2000 pounds! They mate for life, and raise up to three young at a time, sharing in the duties of parenting. When walking around the nest, they curl their talons in to avoid accidentally harming one of their chicks.

The bald eagle was once endangered, due to chemical usage which was later banned. Today, the bald eagle is protected under US law as its national symbol, and is no longer considered endangered. Good thing, too, because bald eagles only exist in North America!

These birds can definitely be rascals sometimes, but we definitely love our beautiful bald eagles.
