Ponte Chiodo, Venice, Italy

While in Venice, photograph bridges... There are plenty! (Some 400 of them to be a little more specific)

But this particular bridge, the Ponte Chiodo (Nail Bridge) is a very unique bridge in Venice. It is the last remaining bridge without rails.

Centuries ago, all bridges in Venice were without rails. But I guess somewhere around the 19th century, so many drunk locals have fallen into the canals, they decided to add parapets to all future bridges. The Ponte Chiodo also has a sister bridge on the island of Torcello. The Ponte del Diavolo from the 15th century. I may visit that bridge too in the coming weeks.

I ran into the bridge by accident, when strolling around Venice. It took a little bit of time to wait until nobody wanted a photo on the bridge anymore, so I could photograph it empty. Without Covid, I probably would still have been standing there right now to wait for the bridge to clear 😉

You may wonder why it is called "Nail Bridge" since you don't really see any nails. But Nail was the surname of the family which owned the bridge in the past.

Cool post and I was wondering about the nails. Thanks for the clarification.
