Hello and welcome back!
Today I wanted to talk about my 3rd roll of film that I've shot, which is also my first roll of EXPIRED film!
So I was cleaning out some old boxes in my room, and in one box of old photos I had, I found 2 rolls of Fuji film never opened, but were about 10 years expired. I've heard of people shooting expired film, with different results, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I read that one of the main things to be mindful of is that expired film is usually less sensitive to light, so they say to shoot it about 1 stop brighter per 10 years of expiration, so instead of shooting it as the 400 ISO it is, I shot it as 200 ISO.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I went up to the White Mountains for my 30th birthday and thought it would be a great opportunity to shoot this roll. So I loaded up my Canon Pellix camera with this roll of 24 exposures and headed out to the foliage!
Before I go further, I mentioned a couple times I'll be going to Japan in a few months, and I want to bring a film camera with me, but a bit torn between my Leica point and shoot and my Canon Pellix for a number of reasons, but mainly weight and practicality as I'll be travelling with a single bag. With that said, the main appeal of the Pellix to me is the manual process of it. The loading and winding of the film, the beautiful sound of the mechanical shutter, the dialing in of all the settings. I think that is my favorite part of film, is the total manual process that really forces me to slow down. But the Leica points amazing quality in a small and easy to use package, so it's a tough choice. Luckily I have a bit more time to think about it, but I digress.
So I shot this roll, and finished the last few shots when I got home, just so I could go and get it developed. I head to my local lab, drop it off and wait.
2 days later I get the call that I'm all set and can come pick it up. At this point, I'm still not sure if anything is even going to come out, so let's see. I head in, pick up my envelope and head home. About half way home I open it up and hold the negatives up to the light to see how bad they are, and I see a lot of faces? These don't look like my photos, because they aren't. Oh boy. I get home and check my thumb drive for the scans to see if those are correct, and they're not. I got some white family's beach vacation photos. I call them and head back, hoping they didn't give my film away yet.
I get there and they apologize and begin to hunt for my film, luckily they find it, begin to scan it, and they print me a set of photos for free to make up for the hassle. As he's printing, he asks if I opened the camera with the film in it. I said no, but if anything is wonky, it's because the film is so old. And then I see what he saw, it looks like a big light leak on a few photos, but I think it's actually pretty cool.
