What has been discovered, in essence, is that solar panel technology has advanced enough to operate reliably in the space environment for long periods. Experimental solar panels that have been in orbit for 7 years have demonstrated greater resilience to the harsh conditions of space than initially thought.

While this is undoubtedly a major step forward in generating energy in space, there are still huge challenges ahead. Launching materials into space is extremely expensive, which represents a major obstacle to the economic viability of this technology, and we still have to manage to send the energy back to Earth.
Aunque no cabe duda de que este es un gran avance en la generación de energía en el espacio, aún quedan enormes desafíos por conseguir. El lanzamiento de materiales al espacio es extremadamente costoso, lo que representa un gran obstáculo para la viabilidad económica de esta tecnología y aún hemos de conseguir enviar la energía a la Tierra.
Developing systems capable of deploying and maintaining solar panels in space, as well as efficiently transmitting energy using microwaves or lasers, is a highly complex technological challenge. But there is no doubt that, if successful, space solar power could offer a long-term solution to meet the growing demand for clean energy.
El desarrollo de sistemas capaces de desplegar y mantener paneles solares en el espacio, así como de transmitir la energía de manera eficiente utilizando microondas o láseres, es un desafío tecnológico muy complejo. Pero no cabe duda de que, si lo consiguen, la energía solar espacial podría ofrecer una solución a largo plazo para satisfacer la creciente demanda de energía limpia.
