The Human Genome Project was an international project with the aim of deciphering the sequence of chemical base pairs that make up our DNA and identifying all the genes in a human genome, both genes that code for proteins and those that do not, although in 2003 it was declared completed the project had not yet been fully sequenced.
El Proyecto Genoma Humano fue un proyecto internacional con el objetivo de descifrar la secuencia de pares de bases químicas que forman nuestro ADN e identificar todos los genes de un genoma humano tanto los genes que codifican proteínas como los que no, aunque en 2003 se dio por completado el proyecto todavía no se había secuenciado su totalidad.
The last hurdle that remained was the sequencing of the Y chromosome, this chromosome is carried by males and is one of the sex chromosomes.
Roughly speaking, chromosomes are properly rolled DNA packets where the instructions for creating a new being are found. In the case of humans, we have 23 pairs of these chromosomes.

Of these 23 pairs, one of them is the sex chromosome and is made up of two chromosomes, a pair of X chromosomes in the case of females and an X chromosome and a Y chromosome in the case of males. Although the XX pair could be deciphered in 2020, in the case of the XY pair, only the X half could be deciphered and until now the Y remained undeciphered.
De estos 23 pares, uno de ellos es el cromosoma sexual y está formado por dos cromosomas, un par de cromosomas X en el caso de las hembras y un cromosoma X y un cromosoma Y en el caso de los varones. Si bien el par XX pudo descifrarse en 2020 en el caso del par XY solo había podido descifrarse la mitad X y hasta ahora el Y seguía sin descifrar.
Now a group of 100 researchers have managed to complete for the first time the complete DNA sequence of the Y chromosome, 62,460,029 base pairs, thirty million more than those that had been sequenced up to now, in addition to revealing complete structures of several families of genes and 41 new protein-coding genes.
Ahora un grupo de 100 investigadores han conseguido completar por primera vez la secuencia de ADN del cromosoma Y al completo, 62.460.029 pares de bases, treinta millones más de las que se habían secuenciado hasta ahora, además de desvelar estructuras completas de varias familias de genes y 41 nuevos genes codificadores de proteínas.

This discovery is of great importance because, when the genome of several individuals is studied, a reference is always taken to compare the sequences and detect variations, but the Y chromosome was not completely decoded, so there were no healthy DNA references for compare and detect possible mutations.
Este descubrimiento tiene gran importancia pues, cuando se estudia el genoma de varios individuos, siempre se toma uno de referencia para comparar las secuencias y detectar las variaciones, pero el cromosoma Y no estaba decodificado al completo por lo que no había referencias de ADN sano para comparar y detectar posibles mutaciones.
Having 100% of the Y chromosome genome available will allow, among other things, to know if some of the diseases or cancers that normally affect men can be attributed to a genetic origin or we have to look for the causes in unhealthy lifestyles, unbalanced diets, lack of exercise or other causes.
