I see summer
Even though
Your colours are autumn;
I see sunlight
And dark pools.
I see
Your white freckled skin
And huge eyes
I’m always falling in.
I see us on bicycles
One time only
By the park,
You told me then
You hated bicycles
And ice skates—
All the things
I was good at
But you liked to dance—
I passed on that
One summer evening
At the end of the week
We got home
Late from work.
We fell on the bed
And you were soon
Fast asleep…
And I lay there
Listening to you breathe.
A star
Outside our window
Smiled down on us
And forgave us our youth
As I forgave you
Hating bicycles
And ice skates
And being good at something
That mattered little to me…
And happily lay there
Listening to you breathe.
