An idea arose to follow the current #Poliac competition with a new tournament. Let's use a working name of "Poliac - Champions League". This post outlines the rules.

1. Qualification

The competition is designed for 16 participants of the Poliac league. Any mention of "Poliac standings" refers to the final standings (as of 31.07, 22:00 CEST) The following participants will qualify:

1.1. Automatic qualification:

top 7 players of the Poliac league
They shall be called, respectively, p1, p2, p3, ... p7 further down.

1.2. Qualifying play-offs:

8 winners of qualifiers
Participants who finish the Poliac league on places 8-23 will be paired for a play-off (2 legs) according to the following scheme:
p8 vs p23
p7 vs p22
p10 vs p21
p11 vs p20
p12 vs p19
p13 vs p18
p14 vs p17
p15 vs p16
The winners will be further down called, respectively:
q1, q2, q3,... q8

1.3. Wild card:

1 wild card awarded to the Poliac participant with the highest total number of steps (column "for" in Poliac final standings) who has not qualified thru one of the above ways.
The player will be further down called:
wc

1.4 Non-participation

Eligible players, who do not wish to take part in the new competition, should declare so by 31 July, 22:00 CEST by commenting this post "I do not wish to participate in #POLIAC-CL". Should this happen, the participants who completed Poliac league behind the one who withdraws, will be shifted up one place to fill the empty slot.

1.5 Eligible players

The eligible players and the qualifiers pairs will be decided on 31 July, 22:00 based on the final standings of the Poliac league. An example, showing the status as of writing (49-50 rounds played), is provided at the end of this post

2. Scoring

2.1 General rules

Points are awarded based on ActiFit app reports published by participants for their "matches". Each "match" is played between two players and the score is decided the following way:

  1. Activity number ("steps") from ActiFit report is divided by 1000 and rounded to the nearest integer (0.5 rounds up to 1). This number will be called "goal"
  2. The player with highest goals is the winner and gets 3 points; the opponent - 0 points.
  3. If both players have the same amount of goals, a draw is decalred and both get 1 point.
  4. In case one of the players doesn't submit a valid ActiFit report, a walk-over forfeit is declared - the other player will get 3 points and score 10:0 30:0 in goals.

Comment: the goals concept will introduce an interesting dynamic in both group stage and play-offs.

2.2 Group phase scoring

Group phase will consist of 4 groups of 4 players. Competition will be held in double round robin mode (6 match days). The final standings will be decided the following way:

  1. Higher number of points
  2. Higher number of goals "for"
  3. Lower number of goals "against"
  4. Total "steps" from ActiFit reports across all 6 match days.
  5. In a very unlikely case of a tie at this point, the above procedure will be used for the players who are still tied, taking into account only direct matches between them

2.3. Play-offs scoring

2.3.1. Rounds with two legs

These rules apply to qualifiers, quarterfinals and semifinals

  1. Rules 1-3 of group phase apply
  2. Total "steps" from ActiFit reports for the two legs in question
  3. In a very unlikely case of a tie at this point, the player who finished the Poliac league on a higher position shall be declared the winner

2.3.2. Rounds with single match

These rules apply to the final

  1. Total "steps" from ActiFit reports for the day with the final game
  2. In a very unlikely case of a tie at this point, the player who finished the Poliac league at a higher position shall be declared the winner

8. Final notes

Should we decide to carry on with the Poliac - Champions League formula, players from the first edition will receive the following benefits:

  1. The winner will be automatically qualified
  2. Runner-up, players eliminated in the semi- and quarterfinals will be seeded in the qualifiers to the next Poliac-CL edition

Example of eligible participants:

Automatically qualified:
p1: @browery
p2: @manuvert
p3: @practicaleric
p4: @venan
p5: @flaxz
p6: @masoom
p7: @bucipuci

Qualifying play offs
p8: @sk1920 vs p23: @asia-pl
p9: @cezary-io vs p22: @racibo
p10: @davidesimoncini vs p21: @kiel91
p11: @merthin vs p20: @ervin-lemark
p12: @ilodz24hd vs p19: @davidthompson57
p13: @ptaku vs p18: @pjansen
p14: @homesteadlt vs p17: @ykretz.sports
p15: @grecki-bazar-ewy vs p16: @giulius

To decide the player who would get the wild card, I will assume that the qualifiers are won by the higher ranked player in each pair. In that case, @racibo would get it.

As it stands now, the following players would not be eligible:
@guurry123 @krakonos @cryptospa @notak @fredkese @akumagai @soluce07

Sort:

looks like a lot of fun! :)

Hm, I am paired against you 😀

That should be interesting.

A very thought-out competition you are putting on here, congrats.

@tipu curate

this could still change, the pairs will be decided from the FINAL standings.

Yed, I know.

And I thought I'll stop using Actifit after the #poliac challenge ends. Well, I might give it two more chances 😁

I am thinking of making Poliac Champions League a regular tournament, roughly one edition per two calendar months. Let's see how the first edition works out. Like UEFA CL, there might be changes in the format, number of players. If there's a lot of interest, why not introduce sth like 2-3 tiers with relegation and promotion.

Good initiative. And a lot of work too 😀

Any way you continue with the idea, good luck!

Wow, you put a lot of thought in this, that looks great. I am definitely in. Like I said, the timing might not be the best for me, as there may be days when I will possibly be away from any internet connection, but I'll find a way to participate anyways.

There's no perfect time to accommodate everyone. I will struggle myself during a couple of days as I might be in a place with poor coverage. The schedule has days off and there are breaks between rounds (mainly to make sure that reports come in and are counted correctly).

This is a new tournament, so let's make it an experiment. We may consider changes to format, rules and prizes (I will definitely seek more sponsors). My rough idea is to have one Champions League tournament per two calendar months. The first one is based on the Poliac league, later on we will have to introduce some qualification system. All TBD. Any input welcome.

I agree absolutely. With that many people, it cannot be ideal for everybody. I wasn't complaining or anything. Your proposed format looks great for now, and like you said, once we completed one, some ideas to tweak and improve it might arise. In any case, I'm sure it will be plenty of fun!

I have to apologise also for not posting on Actifit, lockdown has meant I have been cooped up inside my house daily so no decent step count at all to post...

we shall see in the following days, perhaps some players resign. Or perhaps I could rethink the qualification rules and limit the number of automatic qualifications, thus extending the qualifiers for more participants

It's ok mate. Keep the rules as is. Is not the games fault. It's the situation.

Besides am not sure I will even field a good count while am still inside the house.

Proszę o publikację zasad w języku polskim. Pozdrawiam :)

Ćwierć- i półfinał to mecz i rewanż, finał to pojedynczy pojedynek.

Najważniejsza zmiana w stosunku do Ligi Poliac to sposób przyznawania punktów.
