Voortrekker Monument, Pretoria, South Africa!!
Two days ago, I wrote a post on the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride, where I promised to do a post on the Voortrekker Monument.
Construction of the Voortrekker monument started in 1937 and the monument was inaugurated in 1949. This monument has a base of 40 x 40m and is also 40 m high.
The monument was constructed to commemorate the the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854.
At the front of the monument there is a bronze sculpture of a Voortrekker woman with her children.
The monument is surrounded by a lager of 64 ox wagon sculptures. This is the same number of wagons that was used in the battle of Blood River.
Each corner of the monument has a sculpture of one of the Voortrekker leaders, each sculpture weighs about 6 tons.
The monument is also surrounded by a nice garden, below is a large cycad that is in the garden.
If you would like to read much more about the Voortrekker Monument you can just click on the link. There is quite a bit of interesting facts on this monument.
I hope you liked the post as much as I liked writing it.
I hope you have a wonderful day!!
