Alternative Perspectives From The Air

in #qurator4 years ago (edited)

I am a sucker for drone photography, sadly, I sold my drone so I could get a full frame camera, but hoping to get a new drone in the not too distant future.
What I love about drones is the alternative perspectives you can get from something that you've seen all your life, it's like redescovering something.
This post is to show some of the local monuments we have here in South Yorkshire, something different, but again, something I've been looking at all my life (from the ground lol).
This is quite a long blog, so I do hope you have the patience to read the comments under the pictures as there's a bit of history in there.

Please enjoy these photographs.

This was shot in a place called Nether Haugh, which I live quite close to, Nether Haugh is on a hill and there was no fog there, but I wanted to get a lovely above the fog shot, this is looking over towards Parkgate and Rotherham, the trees in the middle of the picture are at the start of the Wentworth Park Estate from the Greasbrough side, I love the shadows on this shot.

Another shot at Nether Haugh, and this was done using my Phantom 3S. This is a shot of the Rockingham Mausoleum, is a cenotaph commemorating Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, who was Prime Minister at the time of his death in 1782.

HDR shot of Hoober Stand, another monument on the old Wentworth Estate. Hoober Stand is a 30-metre-high (98 ft) tower and Grade II listed building on a ridge in Wentworth, South Yorkshire in northern England. It was designed by Henry Flitcroft for the Whig aristocrat Thomas Watson-Wentworth, Earl of Malton (later the 1st Marquess of Rockingham) to commemorate the quashing of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion.

If you look closely enough on this shot, you can see a monument which is known as Needle's eye. I shot this like this because of the thunderstorm closing in, there was beautiful light and wanted a contrast of the warm greens and yellows. Jack Pollance (the actor) once visited this site and drove through it with a car.

A closer look at Needle's Eye. It was constructed approximately in the mid-late 18th century and believed to have been made in order to win a wager, where the second Marquess of Rockingham claimed he was able to "drive a coach and horses through an eye of a needle". John Carr designed Needle's Eye alongside some other follies in the area. Musket holes can be seen on one side of the structure, most of which are approximately head height; this suggests execution by firing squad has taken place at the building.

This is a a panoramic shot of the 3 dams of Greasbrough, the dams are part of the Wentworth Estate, when I was a young lad, you could happily stroll down the sides of the dams, as well as through the woods etc. Now-a-days, the dams are closed to the public, you can still want down the side of the first dam (you can only just see this one, far right of the picture), as the road runs down the side, but the other dams are now closed off. Sadly, the people in charge of the estate seem to be slowly destroying it's beauty, they have cut downs hundreds of trees over the past few years, in fact, the dam you can see on the right of the picture (2nd dam - Dog Kennel Pond) used to be surrounded by ancient trees which are no longer there.
From left to right is the 3rd Dam (Morley Pond), 2nd Dam (Dog Kennel Pond) and the 1st Dam (Mill Dam), way over the trees on the right.

This is a shot of the bridge between the Dog Kennel Pond and Morly Pond, my Grandad worked on the weir (bottom of the picture), and I've been told that the workers put in the cement a bottle with a sheet of paper in it with all the workers names, a little bit of a time capsule that not alot of people know about.

An alternative shot of the above bridge, just before the Game Keeper came and got me lol.

And Finally, this monument is knows as Keppel's Column, when I was a lad, the houses on the left of screen wasn't built, it felt like you were miles away from home, but it was probaly only around 3 or 4 miles at the most, from where I lived at the time.

The column was built in the late-18th century to commemorate the acquittal of the court-martialled Admiral Augustus Keppel after the Battle of Ushant. It was commissioned in 1773 by Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham and designed by John Carr[. The column was finished in 1780. It was initially intended to be a landscape feature composed of pedestal surmounted by an obelisk, though at some stage the design was changed to a tall column.

I hope you have enjoyed this rather long post, but this is my local area, and it's a pleasure showing people around the world some old monuments.
