While sitting at my computer one morning, drinking coffee and checking my e-mail, as I usually do, I spotted this hawk. Regrettably, I don't have a decent zoom lens for this sort of photography. I ordered one about a year ago, but it's STILL on backorder. I am contemplating asking my neighbour, who is a "professional" birdwatcher (if you can call birdwatching a profession, that is) if he has a smaller lens that I can borrow. Normally, he walks through the woods carrying a camera that resembles a mortar - yes I mean the weapon. I don't need something quite that big to take decent pictures of birds that are right outside my window, I just need something better than the 18-55 mm lens that I use for everything else. Come to think of it, I also need a macro lens for taking decent close-up pictures of spiders. What I have now works fine for the larger specimens, such as fishing spiders, but not the smaller ones, such as jumping spiders.

The first photo I took with my camera, but the other two I took with my phone, just to see how they compare. Upon close examination, I'd say that the pictures from the phone resemble watercolours more than photographs. Anyway, this is a female Northern Harrier, Circus hudsonius, also called a Marsh Hawk. She's been hanging about for a few days now, perching in different trees. She always has two robins (the "American Robin" is known as the "Wandering Thrush" in Russian, and probably in some other languages as well) following her, for some reason, and the day I took these photos, she was continuously harassed by both robins and blue jays while perched.

There's not much more I can say about this bird, other than her arrival has forced me to delay letting my chicks roam free until they are a bit bigger. I took a few more pictures of my chicks, and even some more video footage, but video editing is not something I'm interested in doing at the moment. I also have another 3D print shop episode in the works, showing how miniature tanks are supposed to be processed, since the first time I tried showing that, the print job was a disaster. The models are almost done, I just need to straighten the guns on two of them (this is typical). While I enjoy working in the new shop, trying to film myself working is something of a challenge. I may have to switch to my GoPro, which I hate using. I thought that it would be a good camera for certain things, but it's a pain to use, and the video files are so large that trying to upload them to BitChute is almost impossible.

You may have noticed the "ramblewrite" and "existentialism" tags, and if you're still reading, I'll explain what that's about. Sometimes, I feel like waxing poetically (which is easier in Russian, because the language is structured in such a way that rhyme and verse are much easier to construct than in English... or maybe it's because I learned English from watching television and reading prose, whereas I learned Russian mostly from poetry and songs) about some trend that I have noticed, and now that summer has offically begun, I'll probably spend a lot more time indoors, because we all know how much I hate hot weather and blood-sucking insects (cut me some slack, I was born in a part of the world where the temperature rarely gets above 73 F, and the mosquitoes last for only a month). I suppose this is the perfect opportunity to segue into the need to adapt, one which is so crucial in nature, and yet so anathema to modern human nature. Nature is chaotic, and yet chaos is something that so many people seem to fear above all else. You can recognise them by their sterile dwellings, preferring to sample in nature in very small amounts. People will go to any lengths to escape chaos, and break down in tears when it inevitably catches up to them. They desire the good, but cannot bear the bad and the ugly that also exist in nature. I must ask, though, without the bad, what frame of reference is there to evaluate the good? How does one recognise beauty, if there is no ugliness to compare it to? As Bob Ross once said, "you have to have a little sadness in life to know when the good times come." Just something to think about. Perhaps I'll elaborate in the future, word bearer I've become.

Sort:

Hey @steampunkkaja, here is a little bit of BEER from @oks2crypto for you. Enjoy it!

I don't remember recommending anything. :)
I use a canon zoom lens 55-250mm. It suits me well but I would like to have an additional telephoto lens of at least 500mm.
Cheers.

But you did tell me that you were using a 50-250mm lens when I asked - last year. I took that as a recommendation when I went shopping. I don't even remember what I ordered, to be perfectly honest.

Sorry for forgetting about it. It suits me well. I hope you didn't pay for the invisible lens. :)

Nope, didn't pay for it yet. I won't get charged until it ships out... IF it ever ships out.

You can cancel that order and search for another lens. I would definitely do that.

The #ramblewrite tag was created by @generikat, and I spent more time ranting, so I added the #ramblerant tag instead to my posts for a while instead.

Hey, wait a minute - you noticed that mistake, but not the fact that I misspelled "solstice," and in both languages?!
