New user activity alert page

in #retention4 years ago

Maybe someone will read this who is capable of putting it together, or @hiveonboard/ @roomservice would like some of the ideas and implement them on his website or the @peakd devs, or it'll just get some discussion going on gamifying signups and making it easier for existing users to discover and guide them. Either way wanted to drop some thoughts I had after checking some of the new signups through referral links out.

Anyone remember MySpace Tom?

Those who don't or never used MySpace, he was pretty known there as he'd be your default first friend on the platform, he later became president of MySpace as it was sold and now travels the world and does photography as a hobby.

For anyone not aware yet, @peakd allows you to generate referral links now by sharing any post onto other platforms now. You just click on the three dots above the upvote button in a post, hit share and then get "referral link" copied to your clipboard, this'll get you the peakd link along with a referral link under your username like this one: https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@joshman/how-i-bought-tangible-artwork-from-italy-using-hive?ref=acidyo

The idea initially came to me when we were discussing "the point of #posh" with @berniesanders, a few moments later sharing it with @roomservice and a couple days later it was live on peakd.com. How cool this network is when people can co-operate with eachother for the benefit of everyone here. So the point is, this is a great tool including posh and poshtoken, the latter is unfortunately still somewhat in development, the daily stats and richlist is not visible at the moment but bear in mind it's still working and handing out tokens on your posh activity.

About the idea I had that would be useful next, is to have an alert page either on peakd.com or hiveonboard.com that would scan all referred accounts or even accounts created by hiveonboard, peakd, 3speak and other future bigger accounts that are using the same method. You may say, they already have an alert function when they send the referrer a memo letting them know an account was created. I don't think this is enough though, for instance a few weeks ago a user created an account through me and when I got lucky and he had happened to write a post when I checked and then I sort of forgot about the account. We need reminders, a page that lists referred accounts based on who recently posted/commented, preferably a page on peakd as well because that's way more popular and easy to remember to check in your referral page than having to go to hiveonboard. Nothing against hiveonboard but it's not like it's something you check often unless you want to invite someone and most of the time you already know your referral link or would just use the peakd one by now.

So this wouldn't just be for accounts you have referred but also for accounts that sign up through the bigger accounts, i.e. peakd.com and 3speak, the latter I think had some issues recently as it was generating accounts without SMS verification letting a lot of people farm accounts (probably/most likely). A page that would update on any account that recently posted, on the side it would show the referrer, maybe the referrers reputation if it's not one of the known accounts. This would create a place for people looking for newcomers to go and welcome so they would have some genuine engagement of someone actually having read their intro or first post and responded with something other than the regular spam some bots are doing on first posts. At some point I'm planning on muting all the bot accounts from commenting onto the OCD community cause most of the time they don't help much even if their comments are full of useful links - a genuine human is way more helpful.

Anyway, having this tool would open up and make onboarding initiatives a lot easier. Say one of the OCD accounts would for instance follow people actively checking the list showing activity of referred accounts and if they deem some of them to be genuine and having presences on other socials they'd just have to reblog the post and receive a nice reward through our curation and possibly also some tips we'd generate in one way or another. More about those initiatives another time.

Once poshtoken is finetuned, fully working and is an actual token with a marketplace we'll also make sure to incentivize people in different ways and give the token some value and usecases. Hopefully more people will find value in it and the direct and indirect benefits it brings to the platform aside from what posh is already doing and the plans of covering more centralized platforms in the near future. Posh along with referral links should be a powerful combination, allowing anyone whether they are authors or not to earn a token that will have some value and then beneficiary rewards of referred good authors that will also get more curation because there's people tracking down the new accounts that are giving the platform a try. Most importantly, not missing out on people giving the platform a try but happen to comment on a few authors who don't give two cents about replying or engaging back with their audience which may result in them just leaving.

Anyway, would appreciate some opinions or other additions to this alert page thought I had. Don't think it would be too difficult to set up either and OCD would be more than willing to incentivize existing users to make the most of it and help bring forth new users and get rewarded for their time.

On Hive we can all be MySpace Tom.

Haha yes I've hung out doing photography with Tom years ago and had new years dinner. He got pretty dang good at photography but haven't followe much of what he's been doing recently.

In any case it would be nice to have more tools to view the posts of your referrals which we have a link to that in referral page however how not sure how well it scales when you have hundreds of referrals.

I should've maybe just included it in the post the way I was envisioning it, but here goes, which would maybe scale as well.

so basically like this, making life easier for the Toms of Hive to track down more likely legit newcomers and checking out their first post/first comments and guiding them. With additional options like, only displaying the first 3 posts of said users, or 5 or 1 depending on the viewers preferences on the site, being able to remove some referrers from viewing their accounts on their list, and the list would just be updated with recent post/comment when you refresh. They could easily click the peakd link and if someone else has already been there and offered help/guidance they'd move on to the next one.

I think it should be pretty scalable, especially with more filtering options for each user in the future if the need be.

Am I one of the few who never had a myspace account?? Oooops- Is my non-American self showing? 😆

I try to make it a habit most days to search in hivesearcher.com for #introduceyourself tagged posts - and I comment and vote a few who have got very low rewards. But I'd LOVE to somehow be able to flag those accounts without acutally following them - specifically to give them a head start on their next 3-4-5 posts till they find their feet.

Interesting thought.

Hello @artemislives, if you use peakd then the list function could serve that purpose pretty easy for you. One of the list I have is for those I delegate to with either my active account or somewhat dead delegation account for new users. Once a day I just bring the list up and take a look and see if there is a post that needs a little help. I am a big fan of the list function. It is easy to add them and easy to remove them, and as far as I know people don't know if they are on a list you create or not.

Right now I have 15 list, some are for what mood I am in, like music, photography, writers, others hive tool/knowledge like witness, curators, developers, and some are just general like fun and contest.

None of my list are real extensive, but I am constantly building them as I remember to add people. Communities can be added also but you have to do that manually since there is no Actions button on community pages.

OK - I learned something! Thank you!! Never used, or even looked at, the list function in PeakD - despite using it most every day. Gonna check it out thoroughly and will probably write a post from my @HiveLift account about how the Lists feature can help improve and grow your Hive experience. Is it OK if I ask you a few questions via discord later in the week?

If I am around, I don't visit discord to often, but just let me know in advance and I will try to be there. The times I am active is about 9am to noon Alaska time then again after 8pm for a few hours. Of course you can also just on any of my post even a real old one if you don't want the questions to be seen on a current post.

Here is a short page I did when the I first noticed the List function, https://peakd.com/hive-163399/@bashadow/witness-feedlist-creation

It may help you get started.

The odds of a real time chat are not great given the time difference & that I'm a solo entrepreneurial mom. I hive in tiny, random space-time units. LOL. I can happily msg my Qs under your latest post - great idea. I also don't use discord much at all. Thanks for the thoughts and idea to use lists - I'm sure MANY people really don't know how or why to use lists in PeakD. It's important to share this stuff, over and over and over, in new and interesting ways. :) Have an awesome Monday night - heading towards lunchtime here and I'm in needd of another coffee.

Enjoy your coffee, me I am patiently waiting for home made lemon meringue pie to cool enough to have a piece.

Thank you for this and I see that the list acts as a "favorites" function. Good idea!

Like I mentioned I am a big fan of the list function on PeakD. If I get bored I can find post that may or may not fill my boredom. When you follow to many people then post to fit the mood can get lost. The nice thing about list is you can put the same person on more than one list. So for example you curate, you do social community post, (feather friends, have you been here), so I have you on my fun list, curator list, and social side list.

I've almost gotten to the point I use my list as often as my feed to find content.

Sounds good and I will also start to use the list function my friend.
Yes, I am often in #featheredfriends, as birds are one of my posting favorites.
Listing is a feature that I have ignored for too long, but now I will make some use of it.
Thank you once again for the reminder!

lol took me a sec what you meant by flag 😅

yeah, thing is many if not most won't use that tag, and at the same time many if not most won't go for an original post or intro post at first but just share something random thinking it's more like reddit. Hence we'd need actual readers and guiders to land on their posts letting them know the ins and outs as short as possible and not looking like just bots replying to them which would just chase them away in most cases.

Excuse my lack of tech-nerd-correct terms. 😆

Agree wholehearytedly that many don't use the tag - wither cos they don't know or don't WANT an official welcome brigade! I like this idea of a central spot where we can check in on, and suppprt, nebiews beyond their first post. A little Hive nursery if you will. 😊

I bet Tom is a happy human now, pursuing what he loves. The human factor is lovelier than bots, that's for sure

Ah old Tom he was my best friend since day 1!

I would love to see a feature where we could see referrer names on peoples accounts. That would give some attention to some and let us know some abuse by others.

How cool this network is when people can co-operate with eachother for the benefit of everyone here

Let’s lead by example

Tom was the man though.

I really hope people will not try to game this as usual. Creating ove 1k sockpuppet accounts.

hiveonboard requires an SMS verification unless you have VIP tickets which is what 3speak was using but I think they changed their ways now. Hopefully SMS verification is a bit harder to game.

For being a total h0, making friends with literally anybody and everyone, Tom did rather well.

Re-bots: IMHO all bots should implement the STOP protocol or risk being nuked.

For the first time I hear about the service Myspace. But now is not about that. The idea is really cool. It would be nice to get alerts. In general, I like to receive various alerts (only good ones) 😁. I support this idea with my hands and feet!))

How are referrals recorded? Is it on Peakd database, or on Hivemind sidechain database, or what? I ask this to be able to evaluate the requirements to making this referral analytics front-end you mention.

Lol acidboy..

In the one paragraph you go from celebrating how awesome your are by getting your idea implemented to then needing to sugar coat the fact your other idea is a phantom. LOL

So in summary:

Hive: easy ideas.. we do it.
Harder ideas... umm... one day.
