First Thursday Hash of 2021!

in #running3 years ago

I don't mean to play favorites but the Thursday Hash meetups are my favorite. Most of this has to do with the fact that it is one of the meetups that allows chairs. It is a tradition in most Hashes around the world that chairs are not provided at the circle and it is frowned upon if you do sit unless you have some medical reason to do so. I think this is extremely stupid and if any of the other members read this, I don't care if it hurts your feelings to see me say this.

Another reason that I like Thursday's the best is because of the fact that it is one of the two days of the week that women are allowed to come on the runs. This again is a tradition and would probably result in lawsuits in some crazier parts of the world. The reason why it is done is simply because the very first Hash that ever existed had this rule and it was in a very different time when saying something like that wasn't just legal, but it made sense to everyone including the women who were not allowed to attend.

The women being on the runs adds more to the runs if you ask me. I guess some people like a boys day out but I don't really care about that. When we all go out drinking after the runs the women end up getting involved anyway so the only thing we accomplish by not having them there is to miss out on the hot pants that they all seem to wear as part of some sort of unofficial uniform.

Thursday's run took us to another one of our choice locations that is near a temple. The reason why we use these areas is because they tend to have a lot of land around them that is not cultivated for any sort of crop and at least here in Chiang Mai, they tend to be in hillier areas which gives us an opportunity to do some "ups and downs."

Every time we come to this location the hares try to pretend as though we are not going to be made to go up these stairs right at the start (this is the parking lot) but in the dozens of times that I have been on runs here, we ALWAYS go up the stairs.

It is kind of funny to see the more fit members go charging up these stairs only to slow to a near crawl by the time they get about halfway up.

Another added benefit of running near temples is that they tend to be very peaceful and we do not disturb this ambiance. We always make sure that all of our members are very respectful and quiet, especially if there are other people there visiting the temple for religious reasons. They tend to not be though since the locals tend to avoid being out in the hot sun. We also ALWAYS have permission to be here by the monks as it is never our intention to step on any toes during our runs.

Thursday was a wonderfully clear day and these days will soon be behind us as the smog season is just around the corner. Every year we hope that the government will do something to prevent the crop burning but they never do... so by the end of this month the sky will be filled with smog, enough to block out the sun most days, and this results in many of our member fleeing to other parts of the country until it is over.

At the end of our 6km run / walk / hike we ended up where we always do - in the circle drinking beer, singing songs, and having a great ol' time. The two winners featured here are proof of our acceptance of those who do not want to be alcoholics because they are the winners of the "wings" and neither of them ever drink alcohol at these events. The same can not be said for the people standing and sitting behind them.

As always I heartily invite you or anyone you know in Thailand to come and join us on these runs. They are great fun and you will meet some awesome people. It also is a wonderful way to get a bit of exercise in and that is always a good thing, right?

We have runs scheduled for every Monday (men only), Thursday (mixed), and Saturday (mixed) into the foreseeable future. Hopefully you will come and join us. Full details are available on our official website
