Winter in the Woods

in #scenic-photography2 years ago (edited)

In recent years I've developed something of an taste for Progressive Trance (I know, it sounds like a Mid-Life Crisis when it's written down like that!). A few months ago I stumbled across Leaving Laurel, and especially the closing track from their album - Winter in the Woods.

So, when we had some snow over the weekend in my local area, and I had decided to head to the woods with my camera, there was only ever one album I was going to be listening to... ;)

These are some of the images I took during that outing.

It feels like the autumn colour came late this year as we had very mild condition until only a week or two ago. And then, in a flash (with the arrival of Storm Arwen) the temperatures plummeted and we got snow.

As a result, a few trees still had leaves on, which created lovely flashes of colour in the snow.

This oak, above, for example was a lovely bronze against the snowy landscape.

While I was shooting, the weather was constantly changing - with snow flurries blowing through...

... and some soft mist in the air too.

But even in the clear moments, the shapes in the trees were as characterful as ever:

And finally, at the last of the light, the sun caught in the clouds through the trees.

A beautiful end to a couple of hours in a true winter wonderland.

Hi Kieran! I've been looking at the snow photos that people up north have been posting with great envy, as we had no snow down here. Your photographs are a stunning. It looks like you had an absolute bonanza of an outing with your camera. :)

Thanks very much Cath - really appreciate that!

Yeah - I thought we were going to be left un-snowed-on too, but it came down really quick. Just enough to make it look pretty without being dangerous to drive in (always a bonus!)

I was really surprised with how many shots I was happy with for such a relatively short trip. The conditions were just right, and with a bit of variation in the light too.

Pig in muck springs to mind!

Hope you get some down your way before winter's out - your parkland will look amazing so I look forward to seeing what you get!

It looks like a brilliant outing. I would love some snow down here. We had snow in the park last winter, which was amazing, although it didn't last long, and off course the park was rammed with kids, so it was hard to find a quiet spot. :)

This is a real place? Sooooo cute and beautiful😍🤗🤗🤗🤗

Ah, thanks very much!

Yeah, it's a fantastic small woodland in Cheshire, UK. I've been a few times this year and there's some summer images of it at https://peakd.com/hive-194913/@kiers/a-wander-around-a-summer-woodland - the fun thing is that there's a composition that features in both blogs, just different seasons :)
