Although we haven't realized it, our homes have been filled with robots for decades: blenders, food processors, and, more recently, "Rumba"-style cleaning gadgets that autonomously navigate our homes in search of those elusive lint. But now it seems they want to replace all these small appliances with humanoid robots.

Norwegian robotics company 1X plans to begin testing its humanoid robot, Neo Gamma, in several hundred to thousands of homes by the end of 2025. The goal of these tests is to gather data on the robot’s performance in real-world environments, allowing 1X to improve its AI capabilities and overall functionality.

Neo Gamma, unveiled in February 2025, is 1X's first bipedal prototype to be tested outside of the lab. This model incorporates an enhanced artificial intelligence system and a woven nylon suit designed to minimize risks during human-robot interactions. While Neo Gamma uses artificial intelligence to walk and balance, it is currently not fully autonomous and relies on remote human operators for more complex tasks.

During a demonstration at the GTC 2025 conference, Neo Gamma performed basic tasks like vacuuming and watering plants, though it experienced some technical issues due to connectivity and battery life. These home tests will allow 1X to gather valuable data to train its internal AI models and improve the robot's capabilities.

The humanoid robot Neo Gamma stands approximately 1.65 meters tall and weighs around 30 kilograms. Its design incorporates an aluminum frame covered in a seamless knitted suit, manufactured using Japanese Shimaseki technology, giving it a friendlier and less intimidating appearance in domestic environments, given its sizeable contraption.

The 1X initiative is part of a growing interest in humanoid robots for domestic use. This deployment is an important step toward incorporating humanoid robots into homes, a concept that has long been the stuff of science fiction. For my part, I'd rather wait and see how it works; hitting yourself with a mixer isn't the same as hitting yourself with this thing.

Sort:

Humanoid robots, hmmm it's and all fun and games until one malfunctions and throws my dinner in the trash instead of the plate. I’ll wait till they can at least fold laundry without turning my shirts into origami bro 🤣🤣 but it's a very awesome start and eventually since it's machine, it'll be almost perfect at what it does

I am really careful of what the future holds most especially looking at the direction that we are heading to the word of robots

Hmmm the idea of robots in itself is a good idea but the disadvantages can be scary
